Recently upgraded (replaced) my old 233MHz machine, running Win95B, with a 1GHz machine and Win2K. Been busy reinstalling software. Installed BG and TSC as "Administrator", but want to play as "ordinary user" (actually, my kids and I share this machine, and we all want to play). I'd like to stick to Win2K as it gives my machine some additional "kid-proofing" ...
I can play as Adminstrator just fine. However, when I log in as an ordinary user and start the game, I don't get a "Play" option, but an "Install" option. I've tried ensuring that the BG folder has Everyone permissions. I've also exported the Interplay keys from the registry (HKCU, when logged in as Administrator), and have re-imported them when logged in as "ordinary" user. [It seems to "take", as the registration info appears in the registry OK]. I figure that there must be a file, or registration entry, I'm overlooking. Any clues? P.S. -- the "export and import registry keys" (as well as "set permissions on registry keys and folders") seems to work for some other games. Dr. Bob |

Well I am not a wizard when it comes to the tech stuff like registry keys, but what I do know is that my dad and I share this computer and he is the main "owner" and I have created an extra user for myself. This was before we installed most of the software. After that my dad installed Office and when I wanted to use the program from my user I couldn't. Therefor I tried to install it on my user too. The program now make the original installiation accesable for the user that attempted the second installion, without installing the program again. If u get what I mean. A lot of software works this way, but I am not sure if BG does too (since my dad doesn't play ) You might just give it a try! Remember that you install the program in the same directory as the old one though, otherwise you would get two copies.
Hopes this helps a bit, if not just wait for some of the others to show up who are more tech than me. Good luck, Iluvatar

quote: If Iluvatar's answer doesn't fix the problem, you might try posting this question on the Bioware TOSC tech support boad: http://forums.bioware.com/viewforum.php?forum=11&516 They are a bit capricious about answering questions, I've found, but sometimes provide good solutions for "Known Issues." Good luck, Katherine |
