stuck in amkath-whatever (help/spoilers)

killed the tethyr army in the oasis.
went to amkath and talked to balthazar.
did the lich/marlowe thing.
saw saemon who screwed me yet again.
killed the mercs in the smugglers cave and got no relevant info. then they leave.
killed sendai. went back to amkath. nothing new.
killed draconis, picked up an empty breath bottle, went down the only tunnel i could and killed the frost salamanders.

every other exit/tunnel just inside abizagal's lair is unusable.
no one ever came close to giving me information on how to get in balth's fortress.
that mage couple in the north of amkath attacked me (and died) when i opened their little treasure nook in the wall, so no info from them either.

now i can't seem to go anywhere. the gate guards tell me i have no business. i can't progress further into abi's w/o breath potions. i don't have the key for the graveyard door. i seem to be at a dead end.

there were hints that saemon knew how to get into the fortress but he just framed me and bailed. the other smugglers were no help.

any ideas? im still wondering what i missed because that mage couple attacked me.

Okay so the place with the frost salamanders should have an exit to a room with a pool of water in it (I think). You need to fill up the empty breath potion bottle with the pool (use the pool).

Don't worry about the mage couple (but keep the key they dropped).

thank you muchly...

aye, the mage couple. when i talked to the man, his reply was something like "i can tell you no more", implying he had already told me something previously. odd. i dont remember finding a key on them but ill recheck.

arent doors and containers supposed to be highlighted when you press TAB? i guess i missed the salamander one. by that point my frustration was undoubtedly clouding my thinking.

im guessing i dont get into the fortress until after abi is dead. i thought it was strange that there were no new events in amkath after i killed sendai.

It's not really a door - the salamander place is like a big cave, right? Well at the bottom there's an exit to a new area, that's where you go (I think, my memory's a bit hazy today).
