Help, Watchers Keep 1 (spoiler of course)

What did I do wrong ?

I cleansed the level, got the old priest his slippers, read the chapter and verse off his cerimonial robe in his coffin, and did the cerimony.

Nothing.

Throw all three items in the alter , which seems to be a container like a chest.
From the clues I gathered , and a walk through , I removed and replaced the items, noticing that whenever I put the bell in I heard a bell ring.

The pattern I got is Bell, Bell , Candle , Book,bell

Actually , it's Speak Holy Name, Gather Faithful, bell , bell , candle book , bell, but ther's no way to speak and no faithful to gather (tried going up to the guys on the roof, no luck).

The bell rings, but the gateway doesn't activate.

What am I doing wrong ?

If I remember well you need to put the 3 items on the altar, then the statue will awaken and ask you to perform the ritual.

First put all three items on the altar. Then do as told in the tattered parchments choosing the right dialogue options. Don't leave the dialogue between the options. If you do anything wrong you will be punished by some aggressive spell. If you do everything right the statues should come to live and attack. After you've defeated them the portal will be open.

turned out I'd taken the book out of the alter, the statues attacked, killed them all ,a nd then went on to cleanse the area. When I finally did the ritual , the statues weren't there so ... no ritual. NO dialogue options , nothing.

Luckily I heeded my own advice and made a special archive save before starting the level so I just started over and discovered this.

Leave the book in the alter. Don't take it.
