I was wondering and I am almost certain there are character combinations that can have effect on things...
I was with Hear Dalis and Edwin in my party and I was by the beholder in the underground city that is guarding the tooth. Normally it comes out to a fight but with those two I gained a peaceful conversation and there was (lucky for the beholder) no slaughter. so are there more of such things?

I think it has more to do with your stats (especially charisma and maybe either wisdom or intelligence). You don't have to fight the Spectator at all.
. SPOILER . . . . . . If you're planning on playing ToB, you may even benefit from letting him live.

You're right. As I've just said in another thread, I ought to know better than to go quote-for-quote with SixOfSpades. But I still think it's more fun to let him go.
