Is "dimension door" a broken spell?

I can't figure out how to go anyplace with it. Also, are there any other broken spells in TotSC?

You are talking about "Shadow Door" which has the same animation. "Dimension Door" is a spell only NPCs use in cutscenes. AFAIK you can obtain it, but only teleport very short distances (instead of to other maps as the NPCs do) so it's nearly useless.
"Shadow Door" is an attempt to make your enemy think you teleported away while just turning you invisible.

you can only go places you can click on the same map

i only used it once to get dynaheir down to the dry river bed under the firewine bridge as i couldn't find a path

It is quite fun to try and teleport to 'unreachable areas' such as the middle of rivers where no-one can engage you in melee. The only real combat application it could be used for is for a solo, dual or multiclass mage to get out of combat (not that they should be in it in the first place...

)

It is broken alright. It was removed in BG II beacuase players could effect the game with it in a way that main plot triggers would not trigger.

I can't get the spell to move me ANY distance. I must be doing something wrong. Will someone give me a walkthru on how to go to another part of the same map?

IIRC, you left click on the spell and then click on the map where you want it to TP you to.
