Ok, I was working a new level 1 Mage in Undermountain--BTW, I leveled to level 10 by the time I hit UM Level 5.

Anyway, I noticed out of a mistake, that if you hold down your left shift key while you are dead, and hit respawn, and if you are surrounded by monsters, they will NOT start attacking you until you make the first attack. SO... that gave me time to cast stoneskin and all the other prot spells and then cast at them and won a few battles.

I just wondered if this works for everyone? IS it something old that I just figured out?

I've never heard of that. I have noticed that you usually get initiative on a respawn, but I usually come up swinging, so i don't know if that's the reason or not. I usually do have a chance to run a few steps anyway, so I thought that was the normal thing. I have never tried the shift button though, will next time I die, just to see what's up.

The factions are reset temporarily on respawn so you can usually run before they hostile you again.

No, no.. when I DIDN'T do the shift thing, they would attack me right away. Every time.

Anyone try it yet?

"Z" this has been around since NWN first came out. I found it after the first few times I tried to respawn. I found it by accident, I had thought that It would keep me from loosing 10% of my gold but instead after the respawn all the bad guys just stood there like I was still dead and did nothing until I attacked. You can also walk away about 10 steps before they attack. I always considered it as the head start or that maybe you were invisable to them just after respawn when you use the left shift. I never tried to use any spells during this time I'll have to check it out.

When I respawns I always has to attack first. When the others are down below I usally dies on purpose so that I can run down without interference, and on level 6 and 7 I don't even need to die first I just run through and none of the thiefguild members attack me.

I tried that this morning, and it didn't work for me. In fact, I was almost dead as soon as I respawned, the lvl 10 baddies just respond too quickly, I guess.

CB is talking about the normal resetting of factions I think. Ziroc is talking of a bug he has found which I have also tested and nothing. Perhaps this is only in your own server or have you tried it elsewhere?

I did some more checking with two different PC's;

#1. 10th level fighter on level 3 to lvl 10 portal area after going through hidden hatch, bad guys acted like I wasn't there after they killed me and I held down left shift and respawn.
Tried 6 times and it only worked every third time.

#2 10th lvl fighter/5th lvl mage/5th lvl rogue same area, worked 5 out of 6 times. nobody attacked me until I attacked them. Even if I just ran into them they would move out of the way, then on 6th,7th, & 8th time everybody attacked me no matter what I did.

#3 same two PC's on level 10. It worked only when you wait 30 seconds or longer after death and allow the baddies to walk away from you.

#4 same two PC's on level 9 after a fight with the Crimson Guards. No mater what I did They would run back and attack me, over and over and I waited as much as 5 minutes when I went to the bathroom and came back to respawn. The Crimson Guard and the rest of the baddies would come running from all directions and would attack me, even if I went invisable it didn't help the baddies would just keep attacking.

So this may be some kind of glitch that happens at lower levels with lower lever characters more often than at higher levels.

I tried this in my NWN game on my computer and had the same results at both high and low levels.

I hope this may help answer your question but, it leaves us with other questions and maybe we should post it on biowares forum to see if they have any answers to this glitch.

Ah hah! I knew I wasn't crazy!! I used to beta test games years back, and doing odd crap like this is old habit for me--hitting keys, doing odd stuff to see what happens. (See if it crashes or maybe find an easter egg).

I'll email by friend at Bioware and tell him about this.. maybe it was meant to be in for debugging reasons and was never removed.. weird!

Thanks CB!
