I read a load of FAQs b4 making my character. Everyone says, take the Long Blade skill. The coolest weapons are all long blade later in the game....(I'm a thieving based character and only had room for one weapon skill)

hmmm... well I just stumbled onto the FOundry of somebody or other (I don't know if it's a quest dungeon- I was just exploring daedric ruins) and apart from being the coolest dungeon ever, I stumbled onto the Morrowind equivalent of the Crom Fraer. Only problem is, my blunt weapons skill is 5 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????????????????? And I can't hit even a sewer rat with it, despite having a damage of 10-60!
Damn! Why did I listen to all those guys?????

Ah well, I suppose later in the game there will be long swords...but if you're a newbie and rolling a character - believe me, there's the coolest hammer ever sitting in the coolest dungeon I've explored yet, in a floating chest (oh man! magic!) just waiting for a hammer fan to pick it up. (And I was only level 9).

If i'm not mistaken, that hammer is part of a quest for the Imperial Cult. Anyway, i see that you haven't seen too many weapons yet, cause imo, it's a crappy hammer. I wouldn't wanna get caught dead with a bluntweapon.

Yeah, it must be the Skull Crusher. It's a pretty good hammer, but if you explore some more, you'll find plenty of swords that easily match that.

Ditto the aboves, you haven't explore the entire island yet. there are many weapons that can match that.

now we only gives you suggestions which skills and skills to take. you don't have to follow us blindly. just test the game for a while and decide which skills really suits you. I needed to finish this game 7 times before I really know which skill suits me.

Skull Crusher, that's right. And it's not the best hammer... you'll find a far better one (Sunder) if you proceed in the main quest.

AS to the best weapon in the game, it's eltonbrand: overwhelming damage, single handed, lightweight, some other enchantment. But it's difficult to get, almost impossible. Other grat longswords are the Ice Blade of the Monarch, Chrysamere, arguably the Daedric Crescent. All those deal more damage than Skull Crusher and Sunder.
Unenchanted daedric katana, claymore and daikatana deal less damage than daedric warhammer. Yet the latter can only be got as random weapon, whereas the former ones can be found pretty easily.

As you can see, the issue on whether blunt weapon or longsword are the best weapons skill is pretty balanced. But if you like single handed weapon to use with a shield, then blunt weapon is not an option, since all the hammers I mentioned are double handed, and normal single handed maces deal only minor damage compared to single handed longswords. Also, Eltonbrand and the Daedric crescent are single handed.

Single handed are also some kick ass swords you find in tribunal

But, if you get Bloodmoon, during the main quest, you will be rewarded with the mace of Aevar Stone Singer, which is single handed and deals more damage than eltonbrand...

So, go and train that blunt weapon skill to 50, then practice on some critters.

B_part,
I believe the daedric crescent is a 2-handed weapon.

Right. Two handed. Today it's not my day, I keep reading things which aren't there. I need a holyday. Oh yes I need it.

I put only names, not locations or weapon specs. I don't think that's spoiling.
