Holy crap I nearly defecated myself when I first saw one in the tunnels under the water (at level 3, they whooped me). Anybody else scared of these bad boys?

I had the same reaction the first time I turned around to kill a slaughterfish and saw one. Holy crap! They become fodder quickly though.

No, once you're a higher level, they're not much trouble. At level 15, I can easily take on four of them. Dreugh wax is nice for trading, though. Just as valuable as what you get from flame atronachs (flame salts), but easier to kill.

edit: Slaughterfish are worse, mostly because of their number, and their sight distance. Have to look all over before finding a puny fish attacking from just under me. Then, I swim another 2 feet and I'm attacked again!

You usually find them off the north coast as well as that's where I've run into tonnes of them.

you find them everywhere, actually. at level 18 i did make one mistake with them, however...

...i underestimated them. i just kept swimming, collecting more and more slaughterfish and dreugh chasing me. by the time i decided that i couldnt keep swimming like that and had to fight or die, i had about 20 dreugh and 50 slaughterfish around me. needless to say, it was an embarrassing and useless death.

!? at the above post.
I tried the same routine once, and when I saw that I had no frikkin chance I detonated a ring I had that I designed to save my but. Fire damage 100 for 3 seconds in 50ft, resistance to fire 100% for 3 seconds. That kinda saved the day. I called it the Desperate Measure. Also, items with levitation will get you out of the water instantly btw.

Sir Degrader's sig character is an enemy in Diablo 1. There's two types of it. But that's kinda off topic.

In response to Bozo's tactic, why didn't you just cast water walking and run away?
