It has come to my attention that a game very similar to X-COM UFO Defense is somewhat unknown. It's an older game called "Abomination: Nemesis Project" by Eidos. I personally have played the game. It's a real time squad shooter much like X-com. You can pause the play to issue orders. Soldiers get better with experience and you can assign the XP to abilities however you like. You also have "Hero" characters that are really tough with Psionic abilities like in the comic books. The resource management portion of the game isn't anywhere near as good, but the combat is great! Things like cars and barrels blow up. Your guys are blown back by explosions. It was programmed by some of the guys from the Microprose. The aliens are really weird, disgusting cyborg-like compositions of scraps of metal and human flesh. The alien in this game is kind of like the "BORG" from Star Trek. There are body parts sticking out of some of them. There's also a fanatical cult following to deal with. They get bigger, tougher, and weirder as the time goes on. There's a large variety of conventional weapons available that grows as time goes by. You'll also collect them from fallen enemies although the alien biotechnology is attached to the critters and dies when they do. Anyway, I thought I'd share. With a little more work, this game would have been AWESOME! As it stands, it's just decent. Who knows if you can find copies of it anymore.

I bought it a few months ago to see if it was anywhere near as good as X-Com. Unfortunately, it's not. But it's still a decent game. It just gets too repetitive after playing it for a while. I completly agree that this game could have been something special if it had been developed a little further.

Still, it's worth picking up if you can find a copy somewhere.
