Hello
I got BG2: SoA for Christmas in 2000, i enjoyed it very much, but in November 2001, i accedentaly deleted some files, so i completely deleted the game. I tried re-inserted the disk and the launch screen came up and where is should have said "Install" it said "Play", so i went to your troubleshooting page where i found the answer (#5) So when i did what it said i got a message box that said Confirm File Deletion Do you want to completely remove the seected application and all of it's camponents? OK Cancel Pressing cancel turned off the install process so i did it again and pressed ok, thinking that it needed to delete any residual files from my hard drive, it took me to a screen with a percent bar on the bottom and it filled up quickly then as soon as it was done it closed the install, i've tried everything i can think of, and posted on numerous message boards for help, but no one can seem to help me. Please help, i want my awsome game back Thanks Darkon Blackblade

I'm not sure exactly what happened, but if you want BG2 back, you have to delete the entire folder. Goto my computer and then to whatever drive BG2 is installed on. BEFORE you delete it, FIRST, go into the BG2 folder wherever you have it stored, and copy and paste your saved games and characters to a different location, create another folder outside of the BG2 folder. The saved games will be in 'mpsave' folder if it's a multiplayer game, and 'save' if it's a single player game. Any characters you exported should be in the 'characters folder'.
Right click on the file, select 'copy', then go to the new folder outside BG2 and right click on screen then paste, or you can drag and drop. In the case of the saved games, copy the whole folder with the name of the games on it. Also copy any patches you might have d/l to the BG2 folder, in other words, get everything and anything important out of it. Then right click on the BG2 folder, select delete, and delete it completely. It will be off your system and the auto-detect won't find it next time you insert disk. Install will come up, install it. Then go back to the BG2 folder and copy the saved games and character files(if you had any) back to their original spots, same folders(save or mpsave or characters). When game loads up they should be there. Best of luck... -D |

the problem isn't deleting it and getting back my games, all of it is gone, the problem is getting the game to reinstall

if the BG2 folder is completely gone from your system then it should reinstall. I've had to do that a lot when I've had to reinstall windows. If the folder's gone and you can't reinstall then it must be a corruption of some kind in the software on your CD, you are using CD 1 right? If all else fails I would contact Black Isle/Bioware and ask for a replacement CD, tell them the problem, maybe they will help. Otherwise, I don't know, hopefully Memnoch or someone else knows anything? What do you say guys?
Take care all... -D |

If the game keeps saying Play, instead of Install... that means obviously that it thinks it is still installed. Windows is like that... very anal. What you need to do is one, or both, of two things.
NOTE: These are windows solutions... 1) Use BG2's uninstaller if you can still access it... and let it go through the whole thing. Do not delete the folder like they are telling you. (Because that will NOT TELL WINDOWS THAT IT IS GONE) You see, windows operates on a registry database... and for it to not think you have the game anymore, you have to delete the registry keys... do not do this yourself... leave that to professionals. (*does it to rip trial versions sometimes and stuff*) 2) If you cannot access the uninstall feature, or it continues to tell you that you are to play it... then you need to go into the Control Panel, which can be found in the Start Menu, under Settings... or just in the My Computer folder too. Anyway, open up the Control Panel, and find the little icon that says "Add/Remove Programs". This is what you need, and this is what will delete the registry entries for you and make Windows realize it's gone. Scroll down the list of your programs you have installed, and find BG2... once you have it, select it and click "Add/Remove"... and then it will ask you if you want to completely remove it all and stuff. If though, it does not show you have the game, in that menu, you are screwed, and then you can just delete it all... because it's glitching somehow in the code, and thinking you have it installed where you don't... so it's safe to delete it. If you end up deleting anything, make sure you back up the data folders (portraits, saves, override, all that). If you successfully uninstall it, it will not get rid of the folder itself... it will keep it simply because the uninstall programs will not get rid of data folders themselves... simply because data folders are important... they have your stuff in it mostly... data files like save games which they know not to delete. Try this, and tell me what happens.

wait, it didn't work, when it said it was deleting it it went back to that screen that was the original problem, and when i went back in to Add/Remove Programs it was still there, i tried 8 times and it still won't go away

Have no fear buddy, I've had your exact problem. After uninstalling the game and trying to reinstall it just says "Play". It's a bitch huh? My solution (which works every time for me, but hey, I can't promise it'll work for you) goes a little something like this :
1)Put CD 1 in the drive. 2)When the auto-run thingie comes up just exit out of it 3)Go to Windows Explorer (NOT 'My Computer' mind you) 4)access your CD-Rom Drive (doing this from Windows explorer should hopefully bypass the stupid auto-run thing) 5)Run the Setup.exe program (It's just in the D:\ ,not in any of the CD's subdirectories). It should have a wee icon of a cd and a computer on it (or something similar). 6)Now you'll be right into the install process. Install as normal. 7)Have fun playing a f**kin' awesome computer game! Hope that works for you man. I'd hate to think that you're missing out on playing such a one-in-a-million game [ 04-16-2002, 08:08 AM: Message edited by: Luther ] |
