I have 2 computers connected to a SpeedTouch 510 ASDL Router. Is it possible to use this router as a hub to set up LAN games between these two computers.
Alternatively, is it possible to plug the 2 computers together without any hub and achieve the same thing.
I have no knowledge whatsoever in this field so don't laugh at me or i'll cry...

Well if it IS a router, than yeah, it should be a box with an ADSL modem and a router so in theory should work as a hub. Check how many ethernet ports it has.

Also, you can hook two comps together directly by using a crossover cable

It has 4 RJ-45 ports (where the computers plug in) and 1 RJ-11 port which brings broadband (goes to the phone line). Does anyone else have the same router? I think it's a fairly common one.

Like I said, get a crossover cable for direct connection between 2 network interface cards.

Well a lot really [img]tongue.gif[/img] . Melcheor can use the modem as a router and just plug his two computers into it giving thme a better connection to the router than having to have the internet go through one computer than to the next. I was asking if Melcheor was using windows XP on both machines (i forgot the part about both) because it would make networking easier than having to try and network a XP machine and a windows 98 machine (or god forbid a 95 system).

Who said anything about sharing the internet through one computer? OF COURSE you wanna plug both of them into the router for internet. I was just mentioning crossover cables cos he asked about connecting directly. He wasn't asking about internet usage.

Anyway, why don't you just try plugging them both in the router and put them in the same workgroup and set the IP addresses for the LAN connection to be same except the last digit. Then see if they can see each other in network neighbourhood or computers near me.

Sorry my bad. That Router has DHCP so you shouldnt even need to set an IP address.

Cool. In that case, just check the network neighbourhood stuff. If they can't see each other through the router, you can always get a hub and plug router plus comps into that, or get a crossover cable

Tried this. They will see each other (sometimes) but thats as far as it goes. I have a very knowledgable friend who is going to sort it out for me. Something about XP requiring permissions for computers to access each other and if its done wrong it can let anyone access your computer, the curse of broadband... Thanks for letting me know it is all possible though. I wasn't sure a router could even do such things.
