2 handed. You will be rewarded in the later portions of the game using 2-handed instead of focusing on dual wield. Make sure u also put profs in the "2-handed-style" as well as the 5 slots u get for the two handed sword. Dual wield is also really good though, and you will wish u had it in the beginning.

By the ned, my char was doing 4 attacks per round with a two-handed sword, critical hit on 19 or 20, and damage from 20 to 40 per hit.

for me the most common and powerful weapons in the game are mostly longswords and 2 handed swords... (bows and armors too)
how about daystar, rose, err... i forgot the rest.. but there is a nice swords that fights for you by itself and will go back to your hand once the time expires... how about that rose sword...
twohanded are nice also... lycathor, avenger, berserker sword,
there is only one nice hammer in the game... called crom foyer..
hope this helps.. GL

geez, i dont remember what its called, but after Ribald restocks his inventory in the Adventurer's Mart in chapter 6, he sells a 2 handed warblade of some sorts
i believe this is second only to the Holy Avenger as far as 2 handed swords are concerned
this sword costs a little over 40000GP, but it is very worth it
it has a 1d12+4 at a speed of 7 or 8

Celestyal Fury: Katana +3, -3thac0, 1d10+3 damage Speciality: 5%Chance that enemy will be hit by thunder, which causes another 20 extra damage; Chance that enemy will be stunned. Best weapon, in the game!
Vorpal Blade: 2handed Sword +3, -3thac0, 1d10+3 damage Speciality: 25% chance each hit that target must make a saving throw vs death (-2 penalty) or die. Second best sword.
Holy Avenger: 2handed Sword +5, -5thac0, 1d12+5 damage Speciality: 50% Magic Resistance,
Dispel magic 3 times per day, +5 damage to chaotic evil opponents in addition to other bonuses. Dispels magic whenever the sword strikes an opponent. Only Paladins are able to handle it.
Chrom Fayr: hammer +5, -5thac0, 2d4+3 damage Speciality: grants 25 Strength, kills Stone Golems, Clay Golems, Ettins and Trolls instantly.
Flail of Ages: Flail +3, -3thac0, 1D6 + 4, +1 Acid Damage, +1 Cold Damage, +1 Fire Damage Speciality: : A chance each hit that target will be slowed (no saving throw)

Wave: halberd +4, -4thac0, Damage 1d10+4, Speciality:15% chance of draining victim of water (+15 damage) Slays Fire Elementals, Efreet, Salamaders (no save)

A few weapons i like. I think many people forget how powerfull these 2 halberds are, nobody i know uses halberds. I dont understand why... Axes are my favourite ones, because they are powerfull and you can use them in far combat too. Knives are also usefull.

You forgot the funniest weapon in the game "Lilarcor" Two handed sword +3.

Lawrence Lilarcor was well known, not for being brave, but as an idiot. As the tale goes, the boastful Lilarcor left his village at the urging of his friends so that the "great hero" could do battle with a devious Treant. He walked for days in the dead of winter until, feverish, he found his target and began an epic wrestling match. Unfortunately (or perhaps luckily), the "Treant" was nothing more than a craggy old normal oak. His friends had been jesting, not actually expecting that Lilarcor would go fight the fictitiously dangerous tree. That might have been the end of it, but Lilarcor, not really knowing what a Treant was in the first, didn't realize the truth. He eventually uprooted the oak and, marching proudly home, he declared himself a hero. Thus was born a laughing stock of epic proportions, and over time the name of Lilarcor became the sacrificial fool in many tales of "less than brilliance".
It is not known whether this enchanted weapon is Lilarcor himself, perhaps imprisoned by an evil mage or some other odd coincidence of fate, but it certainly acts in a manner consistent with his level of competence. If it is he, he has never bemoaned his captivity. He might not realize, or care, that he is no longer a human.
As a weapon, Lilarcor has its uses, but many a warrior has eventually given it away. Banter such as "Ouch, that musta hurt", "Oh yeah! Got 'im good", and "Beware my bite for it might...might...might really hurt or something" is a constant barrage on a warrior's psyche.

Shame about halberds, there are so many good ones in this game, a lot of them +4 as well. But for some reason no-one specializes in halberds. Don't forget Soul Reaver +4, -2 to opponents THACO each hit, only usable by evil characters (as opposed to Unholy Reaver +5 only usable by anti-paladins).

The only melee weapons that go to +4 and over are halberds, hammers, 2H swords, shortswords and staves. Unless you count the Flame Tongue +1, +4 vs undead.

Soul Reaver must be the most maligned weapon in the game, Neutral Charecters CAN use it as well LOOK.........

Two Handed Sword +4: Soul Reaver
A social faux pas placed upstart Andor Licon in a duel with Baron Eeirk, heir to a warrior king. Though they seemed of even skill, Andor grew oddly weaker with each hit of the Baron's family blade. Panicking, he bade his bodyguards kill Eeirk. Despite his claims of morality, some noted that the young noble had positioned his men before the duel was even underway, and though he professed disdain for its dark magic, Andor made a tidy fortune off the sale of the evil blade.

Worry not Memnoch, I specialise in Halberds if I'm a Bard, or get Mazzy to when not.
