ok so here the deal i get in there and i set some traps where shangalar teleports. when he teleports for some reason he just freezes there and there are two of them. they both just stand there glowing blue. i really dont have a problem with the thief its the beholder giving me shit. where do i get that bad ass shield that reflects stuff? also when i sned a guy out there it seems that the mage the efreeti and the pit fiend are fighting eachother for some reason. the efreeti and/or the mage usually dies but how do i killthe pit fiend? thanks if anyone can answer that.

I've never fought Shangalr, so I can't help you out there. But watch your language on the boards, Choc has banned others for it and I'm sure won't hesitate to ban you if you continue to do it.

First trick with the big five: know thy enemy. There's a lich (good ol' Shangy baby), a beholder, a backstab-loving thief, a vampire, and a female mage.

Second trick with the big five: this is one of SoA's toughest battles. Best to wait until Chapter Six or so to take 'em out.

I've found that the mage usually casts Protection from Evil/Time Stop/Meteor Swarm/Gate. She casts PfE by equipping a certain item and if you haven't installed the Baldurdash fixpack, the PfE doesn't work for anybody, the staff's current and future owners included. That's why her own summon is beating the snot out of her.

Shangalar enjoys casting Time Stop, followed by Symbol: Fear, Stun, and Death.

Other things to watch out for: Abi-Dalzim's Horrid Wilting, Misleads by the truckload, the occasional Maze (all from Shangalar).

This is my usual Big Five gameplan. Before the battle, I cast some long-term buffing spells, ones with high duration, things like PfE, Chaotic Commands, Resist/Remove Fear. Next, I break out the potions. Giant Strength, regular Strength, Agility, Fortitude, Invulnerability, and those precious Magic Shielding/Blocking potions. I make sure everyone's STR and DEX is at least 18. My fighters have all gulped down an Invulnerability potion, and keep one in their inventory. All the characters who can't drink those have the Magic Shielding/Blocking ones.

When everybody's kung-fu fighting I get everyone more or less in position. My best fighter (good AC and saves) stands right next to Shangalar. My character with permanent negative plane protection chases down the vampire, and hopes the thief follows. If not, I stick a mage character back there, Mirror Imaged and Stoneskinned, ready to beat the snot out of the thief and use Breach/Pierce Magic on Shangalar when necessary. (When Shangalar starts casting Time Stop, the fighter downs an Invulnerability potion and the mage downs the Magic Shielding/Blocking potion.) The character with beholder-resistant items tangoes with the beholder. My other party members assist where needed. I tend to ignore the mage. If the pit fiend doesn't take care of her, the Meteor Swarm usually does.

You can try summons against them, but they usually don't work. The female mage and Shangalar are chock-full of Death Spells (immediate summon-killers), and by the time you get really nifty summons (especially if you have ToB installed), you'll be able to take all five of them down without summons.

The pit fiend will eventually unsummon. You can prevent it from attacking the party by casting PfE, or cast Maze on it, which will remove it from play for quite a long time, or bang on it with +2 weapons or better. You don't get a scrap of experience from pit fiends, so I usually ignore them too.

(The Baldurdash fixpack and the Bonus Merchants, one of whom stocks that special shield, can both be found at http://www.baldurdash.org. All hail Kevin Dorner!)

EDIT: Do NOT trap Shangalar's spawning point! If he doesn't summon all the other members of the Big Five, he could be stuck there, and you might not be able to scoop up his phat lewt. (Am I channeling Team FlapJack???) I had a similar problem when I first met the Twisted Runies. Simply let Shangy do his little song-and-dance routine, then you can beat him up for his milk money.
