Help. Game crashing.

I'm not sure what the issue is. I recently bought a copy of BG2, and it wouldn't get past the character creation screen. I got a replacement copy, and it gets up to Waukeens promenade, and then crashes after talking to that theif (at first it was crashing before he spoke)

I've tested the config. All seems ok. I have an nvidia geoforce video card, that's working. I've been playing Morrowind and other newer games with no problem. What gives? I also played BG 1 right through, no probs.

I've tried lowering the requirements to minimum, (233mhz) with no sound, 2d graphics etc. Still freezes up while loading the area.

I'm running the game off my harddrive, rather than the cds. Is it my computer? I defragged the drive yesterday. Who knows?

Are you using a no CD Crack ?

if so thats could be causing the problem.

Have you installed all the patches and fixpacks?

By doing a full install, you will avoid having to put the CDs in at all during the game, only at the very beginning.

If its having problems running off your hard drive, that's probably the next thing to try. Then we can figure out whether its the installation or your computer which is playing up.

It's a genuine game, not a hack or crack. I haven't patched it no. But we're talking about the slums area. Early in the game.... I'll try and download the patches. It's driving me nuts. I've tried reconfiguring the video card settings to zero hardware acceleration to full, cleaned my computer of any spyware etc. Scaned and rescanned the drive... arrrgh!

I've also reinstalled the game four or five times. At the moment throne of bhaal is NOT installed, and I got as far as Waukeens prom. Before that, it didn't even get to the opening dungeon cutscene.

I installed the fixpack and still no result. Wierd. I had a pro IT friend of mine come over and tweak the computer. Still the same problem. What the heck?

I just tried taking OUT my graphics card and leaving the default card in. Same problem.

Try installing the same discs on another computer. It sounds like you're trying to visit a map area (the Slums) for which the data is corrupted, causing a crash. Though I admit that doesn't fit with the ToB/cutscene connection you mention, but at least it's worth a shot.

I installed it on a friends computer and it seemed fine, though I didn't get as far as the slums.

Now I've got bigger probs. I tried to uninstall it, and it wouldn't. I manually removed the game and now can't reinstall it. Heck!

I tried pulling out my nvidia card, but to no avail. I read in another thread that nvidia cards have had issues. Pity that wasn;t on the read me.

Also, now on trying to reinstall games I took off, like fallout, BG 1, Nomad Soul and planescape, I get error messages as they're installing, saying there is a prob writing to disk.

So maybe I need to reformat the drive?
