All fights fought on Insane Difficulty. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Facing Destiny -------------- Balthazar... had been defeated, but my fight against the forces of evil was far from over. Melissan still walked free and until I stop her plans, there was still a chance that great disaster would fall upon the whole world. It was do or die now, there could be no turning back, and lucky me was the only person who could find her and thus stop her... hopefully. I opened my Bag of Holding and gazed at all my possessions. I had many, many magical items and I hoped I had covered all my bases. Once I was suited up and ready to go, I sought out Cespenar and gave him a quick hug. This would be the last time I see him, and he had been nothing but faithful since the first day. He too knew that we would never meet again and sniffled as I parted, he had told me that I had been the nicest master he had ever known( well, Bhaal was his only other master ever, but that did not matter). Waving goodbye, I stepped through the exit portal and teleported straight to the Throne of Bhaal. Regaining my bearings, I blinked and was shocked by the sight of Melissan. My, my, she had certainly grown in size, all the easier for me to hit her I suppose. I continued to stare at her until she finally noticed my presence. She smiled wickedly and strode towards me, the battle has begun. - Leonardo __________________________________________________ ____________________ I had a problem... Leonardo only had 10 Whirlwinds, how to split that for 4 fights???? After some delibration, I decided on using it 2,2,3,3. Well... that was the plan at first, but it basically got thrown out of the window in the end. Melissan was bloody immuned to elemental damage, so using elemental damage weapons was pointless. I settled on the Purifier in the end for pure raw damage. The first fight was pretty easy, and I only used 1 Whirlwind to remove the Stoneskins, then Melissan summoned plenty of Bone Fiends and I started thinking, Leonardo is immuned to the Bone Fiend's attack( Tear of Bhaal reward in SoA, Immunity to Normal and +1 weapons). With this fact in mind, I used the Bone Fiends as a barrier and hurled K'logarath repeatedly at Melissan until she retreated. Oh, oh, before I forget, I also used the Shield of Reflection. This shield was probably one the highest contributor to the defeat of Melissan( the Bone Fiends being the highest). Melissan likes to hurl very damaging projectiles, but the Shield of Reflection reflects them back, this was especially cruical when Melissan does it during Time Stop( 10 projectiles, all hits). Thus ends round 1. __________________________________________________ ____________________ Melissan becomes 'tougher', I used 1 Greater Whirlwind to get rid of her Stoneskins and then it became ridiculously easy. Melissan summoned Efreetis, Bone Fiends and Nishruus, all of which I am immuned to their weaponary. I simply allowed them to surround me and form a protective wall while I hurled K'logarath at Melissan. Round 2 was probably the easiest fight among the four in total. __________________________________________________ ____________________ This... was the nightmare round, I simply lost count of the number of reloads I had to do before victory was finally mine. Melissan had near continous Blade Barrier activated and she now summons mostly Shadow Slayers, Bone Fiends, Balors and Mariliths. To make matters worse, the Balors had vorpal attacks and I had died more than a few times because they had scored a vorpal hit. Melissan also like to Time Stop and come near Leonardo, causing 3 rounds worth of Blade Barriers plus the fact that she also hits him in melee( at which point I will reload, because 3-4 hits equals death, yay for Insane difficulty). Eventually, it was the old Bone Fiend wall trick that saved the day, with something additional. With just the Bone Fiends alone, I would still die, because her Blade Barrier will eventually kill the Bone Fiends and thus exposing Leonardo like fresh canned sardines. I had two walls, the first wall are of course the Bone Fiends, the second wall are the rest of the demons who cannot hit me( because of the Bone Fiends), and they absorb Melissan's Blade Barrier too. In addition, I also used a corner on the map( you can see it in the screenshot) so that it only took 3 Bone Fiends to encircle me. Cloak of Mirroring took care of the Storm of Vengence and I used 4 Greater Whirlwinds worth of K'loragath to finish off Melissan. It may all sound easy now, but it took many, many tries and experiments before I developed this tactic. __________________________________________________ ____________________ Last round... I had 5 G.Whirlwinds left and most of my clerical spells. Before cutting off the flow, I summoned a Deva, casted Armour of Faith, Aid, Protection from Evil, Draw Upon Holy Might and finally, Hardiness. I had the Deva to cast Globe of Blades and with everything done, I cut off the flow. The moment I regained control, I activated G.Whirlwind and went melee on Melissan, I ignored the damage being dealt to Leonardo and just kept on whirlwinding, after 4 rounds of G.Whirlwinds, Melissan finally fell. __________________________________________________ ____________________ Things I have learnt, 01) It pays to be good( to get the Immunity to +1 weapons and lower). 02) Melee is not always a good idea( especially on Insane difficulty where Melissan does 50+ damage per hit, Blade Barrier does 70-100 damage, and Hardiness is precious). 03) Protection from Evil does crap against Balors. 04) Patience is a virtue. ![]() Equipment Used -------------- Armour: Sharuppak's Plate Gloves: Gauntlets of Extraordinary Specialisation Helmet: Helmet of Defence Amulet: Amulet of Seldarine Rings: Ring of Gaxx, Ring of Earth Control Cloak: Cloak of Mirroring Boots: Boots of Speed Belt: Girdle of Fire Giant Strength Weapons -------- The Purifier, used against Melissan in melee K'loragath, used against Melissan at range Axe of Unyielding, used against Melissan's summons Shield: Shield of Reflection I used hit and run tactics to deal with the monsters guarding the pools by the way. __________________________________________________ ____________________ --------------- As I struck what was to be the final blow on Melissan, Solar appeared and finished her off. Solar also healed me and I was relived that everything was finally over. She beckoned me however and it was then I was asked to make a decision, Godhood or mortality? My answer was swift and without hestitation, I would better serve my fellow men by being a mortal, accepting Godhood would have alienated me from them and that could not be allowed. Solar smiled at my decision and began the ceremony to make me mortal. I was finally free... free from a path that would have made most go insane from the responsibility involved. I am going to miss the power perks though... nahhhh. - Leonardo __________________________________________________ ____________________ Thanks for reading. *takes a deep breath*
I did it! I DID IT! WAHAHAHAHA!!!! ![]() I switched to Insane Difficulty accidentally after killing Sendai, and it remained there since then. Whew! It had been a rough ride, Leonardo started off weak, then supremely strong, then back to survival mode again. Ah, now I can concentrate on my solo Sorcerer, on pure Insane Difficulty all the way this time( in Chapter 4 now). Next up thereafter, Wild Mage and Blade. ![]() Somewhere in between, I will be creating an all-mage party too. |
