Need a new thief

I'm replaying the game right now, not as a thief like I normally play. My thief right now is Nalia (or something like that lol... bad with names) and she's not very good! She never can pick locks... I've been using the knock spell since I lost Imoen. Are there any better thieves in the game? I can't think of any. (Yoshimo is one... but he's only marginally better at picking than she is) Also, most of the time I do the skinner murders so the inspector gets killed... is it better to do it that way, or to confront the tanner first, then tell him, so he doesn't get killed?

yup, Jan is the best theif in the game, ok so he's only 1/2 a theif, but his special gear gives his some pretty nice bonuses to his thieving abilities, and it beats nursing Yoshi along until he's good at being a thief, altho his traps are nice
