Just a question about protection from evil - seein as i don't have my manual with me! what exactly does it do? i know that it stops certain hellish minions from ripping you to little mortal bits when you summon them.

But i've noticed that when fighting chaps of an evil nature that it seems to help along the inevitable process of me beating the snot out of them - does it increase your attack, defense etc?

Protection from Evil in a way gives you an Invisible affect to any summoned demons in the area. If you have it cast on you, they won't attack you (unless you attack them). If they do try to attack you though, they get a -2 to their attack rolls and you get a +2 to your attack rolls.

A minor correction. If you are protected from evil, then a summoned demon (it must be a demon and it must be summoned) cannot attack you AT ALL. You can attack the demon without being attacked.
Let us note that there are many demons in the game that aren't summoned. These demons will ignore your protection and they will attack you immediately when they spot you. Also, some summoned monsters pretend to be some kind of demons but they aren't demons - for example, Nishruu and Hakeashar are ogres. Nishruu and Hakeashar will ignore the spell as well.

As Gangrell has noted, the spell gives you a bonus to attack and inlficts penalty to attacks against you. The bonus and penalty aren't related to demons - they are applied in any combat. Therefore, it is always a good idea to cast Protection from Evil 10' whenever some not too easy fight is before you.

It helps against most fights, most enemies are evil. And it lasts for whooping eight hours.

A minor correction on Radek's post, no demon is summoned in the game , they are gated there for making them immume to death-magic, because they are gated so they will not be slain automaticly when a death-spell is cast.
