I was fighitng those Winter wolves and wacked one and the game said "Critical hit averted by helmet!". What is going on here?! Last time I checked wolves aren't smart enough to wear helmets!

The Snow Wolves that have the helmets you described are Snow Wolf Construction workers. Look for the pair that carry the Slow/Stop signs.

I sure hope that those Snow Wolves had some sort of signalling device with their stop/slow signs to let passing peasants and commoners know that adventurers were passing by. Some sort of device, like a gong perhaps.

Certain creatures are naturally immune to Critical Hits--apparently, the Winter Wolf's thick fur helps to cushion attacks before they actually hit the wolf's flesh. Or something like that.

This is a common mistake. If the box below the game screen said 'Winter Wolf- Critical Hit Averted by Helmet', it means that the wolf's attack was a critical hit, but your character's helmet blacked. It in no way means that wolves get helmets. Crazy, huh?

Yeah, that's also a possibility. n00body didn't say who made the attack.....If it was you who made the attack which was blocked by the helmet, you'd see something like:
Minsc- Attacks Winter Wolf
Minsc- Critical Hit Averted by Helmet
Winter Wolf- Damage Taken (6)

Surely an attack by a Snow Wolf that was blocked by own of the NPC's. A wolf with a helmet sounds too funny

I'm not sure, as I've never checked, but my presumption has been that the "helmet" is a shortcut on the part of the programmers. Its easier to write that for all then 'Critical hit averted by...(insert mendicant here)'

toughened leathery skin (dopplegangers)
very stout feathers (harpies and such - I know not in BG)
chitin (ankheg)
amazingly thick fur (wolves)
extra-planar unpleasantness (you know the one from TotSC)
rather squishy flesh from undead-creating process (ghouls)

...etc, etc.

You sure have a good point there Lord Brass. Just a lazy solution (by the programmers)
