Who would you take, xan or edwin? I have me (Half-orc barbarian (using trilogy) jahera, khalid, imoen and im either gona take kivan or kaigan. By the way can you actually do his quest for him (the caravan thing?) I like xan cos he has a cool weapon but i hate how he cant use evocation, eg. magic missile, fireball, lightning bolt, eg all the good spells. Although he can use identify which i find useful. Edwin cant use identify but can use all the other good spells.

Xan is actually quite powerful in his own right. Sure he loses some staple attack spells (he still has many good ones left though) but you will come to appreciate how good Charm Person is at drastically turning the tide in battles.

Actually I would not deem Magic Missile the most serious loss. When you are low level it is not really that fantastic a spell. No, the loss of Fireball is annoying. There are several situations where clearing a room of low level critters ASAP is really needed (Firewine Bridge anyone?). Still you'll get some Oils of Fiery Burning that might help you out a few times.

Then there are the personality issues. Edwin is an asshat! No, it's not just his alignment. He has a very very repulsive personality. Also his quest involves something that all decent people would find very unnappealing.

Xan on the other hand is a nice enough guy. Sure he might sound a bit depressing at the start, but it is only skin deep. Besides in the end his persistent droning might be one of the things that will comfort you and keep you going to the end.

Finally there's Xzar and Dynaheir to consider. Both are quite adept at hurling fireballs at the enemy.

Definitely Edwin. I know people like Xan for his personality, but the way I play at least, not have magic missile just isn't an option. If he's your second mage then maybe, but considering the spells that Edwin misses out on (know alignment? ), he's much better IMHO. You get so much money from all the loot you find that even if you have to pay for every identify you do, you'll always have enough money. And Edwin should get a reasonable lore skill so he'll be able to identify a lot of things with no spells.

And no, you don't do Kaigan's quest. He says don't worry about it when you get out of town

You sort of do, because if you don't go to the area north of Beregost periodically, Kagain will leave the party. He doesn't ask often though, but if you play the game over a long period of (game) time, exploring and such, then it can become an irritation.

In answer to your question, Xan's a good enough mage; don't forget RoSs_bg2_rox, that there isn't a spell in the game, well BGI at least, that you can't replicate or do without.

Edit: Play your character, your alignment or your prefrences on the Edwin-quest issue. Think about what your character would do, and the choice becomes fairly obvious.

Well I think you should try each, then see who you liked better reload and go with them. I would personally go with Edwin I never play an evil party, but I kinda like him... plus I've heard Xan can get annoying.
