Welp, I've never played NWN, but after reading some of the conversations here, I decided to give it a try. I haven't bought the new expansion as I have plenty to do for a while.
So, can anyone offer some general advice on a starting character? The Prestige Classes sound pretty neat.

I have discovered that a sorcerer makes a good fighter as well, since they don't have to waste time memorizing spells, they have more time to learn sword-play, and the high charisma helps. Maybe a Paladin-Sorcerer would kick some nice ass...but I do not care for paladins. This character would later be upgraded to a red dragon diciple easily if and when you purchased the new expansion. Therefore your time would be well spent.
That would be my choice if I were where you are now. Take it for what it's worth to you.

Sure we can help you, but it might be a bit easier if you told us what kind of character you like. A plain Fighter or a Barbarian is a solid choice bit boring if you're not into fighter types. Another one I would recommend here is the Paladin; an interresting fighter with some spellcasting later on.
Rogues and Bards are fun, but they require some finesse to play and the pure spellcasters ( Wizards and Sorcerers) require that you have an intimate knowledge of which spell is good and which isn't. The best character tip I could give you is the Cleric, a potent fighter and a potent spellcaster with the right domains. A Druid is an alternative here.

![]() I've been playing IW2 and really enjoying it. It looks like I'm going to need to unlearn some habits from that game though. As far as classes go, I've read the manual thoroughly and think I would like to make a Ranger > Arcane Archer, or possibly Monk > Shadow Warrior. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Both of your ideas are great...though I would personally choose the Ranger/Arcane Archer...as I think it would offer a bit more "challenge".

Arcane Archers are great, just remember that you need at least 1 level of Wizard, Sorcerer or Bard to become one.
Monk works best if you don't multiclass them but if you do, Shadowdancer is a good PrC.

Thanks for the advice all, I rolled a Pally and will try throwing some Sorcerer levels into the mix later. One question though, will the Plate armor hinder his ability to cast spells? Pardon my lack of D & D rules, is there anything to consider when planning a Pally / Sorc?

Any armor affect arcane spellcasting by adding a spell failure precentage. The only 'armour types' which doesn't have this are robes and common clothes. So yes, a plate armor would definately affect your ability to cast spells, it has a 40 or 50% spell failure. Pretty steep if you ask me. But...
There's a feat you can pick called 'Still Spell' which allows you to cast a spell as ignoring the somatic component. In other words you can cast spells with any armour on without risking spell failure. Stilled spells are casted at one level higher than 'unstilled' so a level 3 spell will be casted as a level 4 one. Wizards have to prepare meta-magic before they rest just as their other spells, but as a Sorcerer you can use it on a fly. Just remember that you will be using up spell uses/day at one level higher than normal with Still Spell. Is there a specific reason you want a Pally/Sorcy? Is it for the 'Divine Grace' feat? ![]()
