Have you read it? It is really great book written by Roger Zelazny, one of his first books.
From cover:
"A distant world where gods walk as men, but wield vast and hidden powers. Are they truly immortal? Who are the ods ho rule the destiny of a teeming world? Their names include Brahma, Kali, Krishna and also he who was called Buddha, the Lord of Ligth, but who prefers to be known simply as Sam"
Fantasy and SF in one cover.
Some or many of them had good intentions, they wanted to protect, to care. But power corrupts, time corrupts. Now they want to preserve their rule. They became authoritarian. They dont want to share thei powers. They dont want plain people and even their equals to ask questions like: who gave you the right to rule, to tame, to set rights. They want to be worshipped, followed, listened without any doubt.
Sam and their (gods) origins were the same, but he didnt want to become god, he wanted to live a simple life, to be left alone. Thus his existence was a threat for gods. They felt strong themselves and wanted to enforce their point of view over the whole world, over all living creatures. Sam opposed them.

One of the best books I have ever read.

Yes, I love the book too. I've always been a big fan of Roger Zelazny. Even his mediocre stuff is better than a lot of works by today's authors.

OH YES IT IS!!!! Lord of Light..... one of the best books in the whole wide world!!!

BTW, everything I know about the Hindu pantheon is gleaned from Lord of Light, which I have read more than 40 times, I do believe....

Can't tell you how many Hindus I've astounded with my deep and detailed knowledge of their gods........
