After all the recommending on this forum I bought the collector's editions of the Icewind Dale Trilogy and the Dark Elf Trilogy. From the introduction I learned that Icewind Dale was written first, but the events in Dark Elf chronologically take place before it. In which order do I have to read them to make sense and fun?

Well I suppose what Dreamer128 is saying is correct, although the IWD trilogy was the first written and released, so you may want to read it first, as there may be references to the characters etc. from it (i.e the likes of appearance may not be mentioned as much in the Dark Elf Trilogy) although Salvatore is good at introducing people half way into a story.

what books does the dark elf trilogy consist of again? As I haven't read them all but I think I have read some of them. I have however read the IWD trilogy and some of his other books. I personally would start with the IWD trilogy, although I havent read all of the Dark Elf trilogy so you may want to get advice from someone who is.

It's mainly Drizzt that gets screentime in the Dark Elf Trilogy. Bruenor and Cattie Brie show up at the end of last book, but I had little trouble understanding their characters without having read the IWD trilogy.

The Dark Elf Trilogy consists of "Homeland", "Exile" and "Sojourn" and is described as the story of Drizzt's way to the surface. I guess I will start with this one tonight, as it seems fit to start at the beginning.

The Legacy of the Drow Quadrilogy
The Paths of Darkness Quadrilogy

Jerr ... the word you are looking for is quartet.

It's best to read the books in published order. Salvatore has quite a few inconsistancies in his books but they are more forgivable taken in published order and can be chalked up to development error ...

True enough, I guess. But I started with the Dark Elf Trilogy myself, and didn't notice a single one
