Okay, as usual, I've been trying out several different parties, finally got it boiled down to one I really like and plan on continuing through the game with. (Samaurai, Lord Ranger, Bard(!Wow!) Gadgeteer(reserving judgement), and Bishop (Heal/protect).
But then, being curious, I decided to just "try out" one group with three magic users and no Bard or Gadget and No major weapons. (Monk, Ninja, Rogue, Psi, Alchemist, Priest.) They're actually surprising me, so far. In all the other parties I tried, I had a Ranger until this last one, and wow what a difference that Scouting skill can have on finding stuff! Even though a couple of my members have very high Sense ratings, they just don't see stuff. Missed quite a few weapons, etc, and what's worse, a magic book or two. Once I got the Secrets spell with my Psi, I did go back to where I remembered a few of the more important things from the previous groups, but back tracking is still backtracking. And as I'm still not very high level, the Sense spell doesn't last long and uses up spell points. Can't keep it on all the time. So my question is this: Without a Ranger, is there any way to build up the Scouting in the other characters? They see regular objects, etc, quite well, it's just the hidden stuff they miss out on. Will continued use of the Secret spell eventually give one or more of my characters some Scouting that will then take over naturally? Or do I have to continue using the spell whenever I'm at a place that looks like it might have some hidden stuff? Thanks for any tips! judee |

well, you can have a spell caster use "detect senses" and "x-ray", but they would have to be up all the time. and i think they come pretty much later on.
just use the basic "search" skill to help in the beginning. the BIG drawback with that is you always get surprised by the baddies. the thought is your party is so busy looking on the ground and in corners that they get the "jump" on you in every encounter. so those are some workarounds. i am sure that other players will have much better suggestions, tho. personally, i adore my ranger and can't live without her. i also cannot function without a healer and a "pure" caster. but then, that's me. you should absolutely make a party that you adore and can't live without. then you will have the perfect party! so, get to it and do it! V***V

Boy, do I feel stupid!!! I forgot all about the "Search" button! No wonder I wasn't finding anything! I guess I got spoiled by my Ranger in the other group.
I'll probably end up playing through with both these parties, parallel games. After trying out about 4 other groups, these two seem to be my favorites, one with fighting power, the other with magic power. Each party has different strategy and handling. I know I could play the game through with one then come back and do the other, isn't that what most people do? Lol, Î've always done it like this though. Parallel parites. (In Might and Magic I always did a "good" and an "evil" party.) I must be dual natured! Thanks for the reminder on the Search. Sometimes we just forget womething when it's too obvious!!! judee |

Actually,
Scouting through the ranger is far better than doing the regular search. If you just do a regular search, the chances of finding monsters is also increased. Be careful man!!! |

The down side of searching (if ya don't have a ranger) is that you can often be "surprised" by monsters and lose the initative of combat. (Not a big deal to most, but one entire round of them beating on you with you unable to strike back can be damaging)!

As far as my experience is that an rogue with almost 100 points in senses and the search mode on works like an charm as to discovering hidden item's, he seems to be discovering almost if not all
