Perhaps Wyv can move this over to the DL board when it opens...
![]() Tip #1: Fighting slimes. If they gas you, it takes a few seconds to cough and gag it out of your system. If you're next to them, however, they will keep attacking and may gas you again. What I do is to double-tap the forward key (to launch into a roll) several times, changing directions if needed. They will chase you and won't gas you until you're close again. The roll gives you more time to get away and recover... typically, it takes about three rolls from what I've seen. Tip #2: Fighting War Trolls These guys are big, mean, and nasty. They also regenerate... fast! I found the locust swarm spell to be very effective on them... just make sure you've got a few of 'em available before you do battle! Tip #3: Using sword and shield Your opponents will have an attack pattern. Use your shield to block while they're attacking, and then attack when they get to a pause in their pattern. Be careful that your shield doesn't wear out, though... you'll know that's happened when you stop blocking attacks and start grunting and splashing blood... And if you think it's cheating, they do it to you... ![]() Got more tips? Add 'em in!

Set up your FAST MAGIC hotkeys - very useful!
(I personally don't like using the left hand keys for movement and all - I prefer to use the numberpad because the 5 has a bump on it so that I can tell without looking exactly where my fingers are. If you are similarly inclined ![]() Take the time to reassign your keyboard commands - I switched the Q (quick swap) command to the * on my numberpad - which saved me having to reach way over to the far side of the keyboard to make a vital move. I found that Fireball worked well against the War Troll but by the time I got to him I had a lot of Fireball spells - I didn't use magic that often while going through the demo so when I needed it, I had more than enough spells on hand. (I'm sure I tossed off a few more than I needed to in the panic of the situation! lol!!) |

Just thought of something else... bats bug the heck out of me. I can't see 'em coming, and by the time I do, they've already attacked and flown away. Your bow has almost mystical accuracy... even if you can't see a critter, it will unerringly aim arrows straight at it. So when plagued by bats, get your back to a wall and start shooting arrows in the direction you think they'll come from.
Arrows seem to be unlimited, BTW... or perhaps that's just a feature of the demo.

Bows are wonderfully accurate in the demo.
Most of the weapons I found along the way were swords - with the exception of a goblin staff (?) - I'm wondering if DL will be similar to W&W in favoring specific weapons. |

Thought I'd add in something new... you need more than just the skill to use something. For example, I found a +5 Battle Shield, which requires the Medium Armor skill. (Armor? I think so... although it should be shield). I couldn't use it without a penalty until I had level 5 in medium armor... so there's a correlation between the protection level and the skill level.

I downloaded this, and got pretty frusterated at first, but the more I play, the more I like it!
I played two fighters all the way through and found a few tricks. Ninjitsu is surprisingly effective. The quick attacks seem to interrupt enemy attacks and hit them in a good pattern of high and lower that you seem to get more hits in, and make no mistake - those hits are lethal. Also, I drop kicked a bat, LOL. Also, carrying a shield while fighting hand to hand is very effective, as you'll have a defensive option and it doesn't take away your shield arm (why are they all lefties? lol) for fighting. Jumping and attacking, if you can coordinate it right, seems to do a special attack that I find is a good way to open a fight, and if I'm lucky, end it quickly. Note that tapping to the right or the left (twice maybe) and jumping gives you a quick move that will let you attack as soon as you land (unlike rolling). Caught more than a few of those shield goblins/thieves with my blade like that. There's a backflip too, at least with the wylvan. Dual wielding weapons is mighty, especially until you get the hang of competently fighting. Timing. Agreed on the pattern of attacks and timing, but wanted to point out that, since your character will do (semi) predictable patterns of attack as well, you can use that to your advantage. Take two swings with your sword as you're approaching a group of 3 or more, timing the 3rd and fourth to be in the thick of them. The spinning attack can outright kill a goblin with enough skill and strength, and the thrust that comes after it can be aimed at an archer or shieldless foe to take him out of the battle early. Try to focus on one at a time, as in any game that doesn't weaken foes as they're damaged, though using a slash that you know won't hit your target at one who steps closer isn't a bad move. Pay attention to weapon lengths - they have attack ranges, and they're nice enough to let you know about it. I can tell the difference between a stubbier rusty axe and a longsword. I haven't been able to find any heavy weapons or large pole weapons to suit my fancy yet, but I think the combat is great fun. Pressing R to instantly resurrect oneself cannot be overlooked either ![]() |

bumping this thread because it did not get moved here to the DL forum from the W&W forum until yesterday - so everyone might not have noticed that it arrived (late, but it arrived!)

i noticed that when your weapon skill level and either your agility or speed get kind of high your downward chop attack (reverse + attack) can be executed VERY quickly compared to any other attack. with this in mind, whenever i am getting over-run with a LOT of monsters out in the wilderness i start walking backward and performing that chop.
basically, keep walking backwards with your shield up and as soon as a monster gets close hit him! you can also keep walking backwards while constantly swinging your weapon in chop-style. after a minute or two it thins out the mob to just one or two. at this point i go back to regular attacking.

About fighting chunnellers:
kill them fast before they release a swarm of bugs at you. i start out by doing a forward leap attack. 9 times out of 10 when you're quickly approaching a chunneler he'll hit you with his spiked tongue. By leaping into the air you can usually avoid his tongue and get in a couple of swings. after that, just continue attacking him as fast as you can. you might take a couple of hits from his tongue but it beats getting stunned by that swarm of insects while he pummels you with his tongue. FYI: don't bother with spells. fire spells don't seem to have any affect on them and magic missle doesn't does that much damage. if you have to keep your distance than get him trapped somewhere and kill him with a bow.
