Anyone got any idea why this is happening?

Hmm, I use Windows ME and it works perfectly well.
You should try going to the faq on BG2s official site, Interplay.

cant find old drivers? this is what the internet is for.

ME wont let you into DOS? bull, hit f8 on startup and select command prompt only, or run command.com any way you choose. (ME might not come with it, but your 98/nt discs will have it somewhere). The dos prompt wasnt made really hard to get into till XP, although i hear you can even get it then. if all else fails, get someone to mail you a DOS boot disk, or make one yourself.

and we cant use DOS becuse mr gates, in his *cough* infinite wisdom decided not to develop dos and give it multitaking capabilities or a standardised API (read Direct X). sometimes i cry, but then i boot into linux and things work better. except games.

back to the actual problem, sounds like a corrupted file, which likley means a scratched disc. clean it and retry, then go bug bioware about it.

Just to clarify, from ME on, it's DOS Emulation through Windows. There is no longer DOS as "DOS".
I do think your right though andrewas, back in my Win 3.1 days, I got myself out of more software problems throught DOS, than "Carter's got little liver pills".
