In an age, like many other, yet unlike any other there lived a nearly omnipotent wizard named Rapisdere. For almost all of his life he was concerned with nothing but increasing his power. He let nothing come in his way, destroying both good and evil without mercy in his quest. When all his foes had been slain and all the powerful items he could discover had been gathered, he found controlled the entire world. Dissatisfied that there was no more things of power to be gained from the world, he locked himself away in his
impenetrable obsidian tower, not to be heard from for 400 years. In the mean time the name of Rapisdere faded from memory into legend, and a town grew up around his tower. By the time 400 years had passed the residents of the town had completely forgotten the origin of the tower, though only the bravest souls would even pass close enough to let the shadow of that tower fall on them. It was said to be cursed, though no one could remember what the curse was.
Then one day the worst fears of the world were answered, Rapisdere returned. He came down from his tower in the dead of night and stormed into the town. The town mayor died in his sleep before he could even be warned of the threat, as well as a good number more. Those that survived remember the night as vague terrifying memories of blood, fire, and fear. That is how it went for many more kingdoms, as Rapisdere cemented his power. He proclaimed himself ruler of the world, and seeing as how there were none powerful enough to defeat him all bowed to his will. A few years passed and by the mage’s manipulation the city around Rapisdere’s castle became the largest and busiest city on the planet, taking up a full 25 square miles. The taxes were high, but the citizens were well protected. Laws of the city were swift and brutal. Overall times were once again good for the citizens, though there was unrest growing amongst the common folk. Most detested the mage, and would speak his name as a curse. Upon hearing this Rapisdere ordered that anyone questioning his word be put to death. This led to the creation of a special enforcement unit called the Black Guard. They all dressed head to toe in black armor, and none had ever been defeated in combat, nor was seen out of uniform. When not “working” they stayed at the mage’s tower, and no one had ever caught a glimpse of their face. Anyone that spoke up about the mage either mysteriously vanished, or was brutally slain publicly by the Black Guard. The general outrage at this lead to the formation of an underground movement that called themselves simply Illumini. With the creation of the movement Rapisdere ordered the Black Guard to hunt them down and destroy them. This led to increasing disorder and gaining popularity with the Illumini movement. When months passed and the movement only got stronger and better organized, Rapisdere knew that it might eventually pose a threat to his unrivaled leadership. Thus to entertain the masses into forgetting about what he lacked as a leader, he created what became known as the Pit of Rapisdere, and sent out requests far and wide for contestants.

Pronounced: Rapisdere (ra-Peez-day-ray)

Description: The pit appears to be a perfect circle cut into the group with a diameter of 150 yards. All around the pit rows of bleachers are set up. A general ticket is free to all, though people who wanted to pay could get a better seat. Directly opposite from the door was a 20 yard space where there was only one seat, a giant throne carved from the skull a huge dragon. It was decorated with giant diamonds and rubies, that glittered from the light emitted from the glow globes placed at even intervals around the room. The top of the pit is covered entirely by a giant permanent wall of force. The pit itself is a piece of extraplanar material willed into being by Rapisdere. One could not enter or leave the pit without it being willed by the mage. The pit always appeared to be exactly 150 yards in diameter to those viewing though this was simply because that is how the mage wanted it to appear to everyone else. Once inside the pit the environment was subject to the mage’s imagination. For one bout it could be a dark forest and for another an open plain at noon, and for another a shadowy maze. Also once inside the maze it was much larger than it appeared on the outside, the actual diameter being about 1/2 mile, though to the viewers it was sized to scale and always 150 yards in diameter.

Rules:
I have to say that everything in this thread is at the DM’’s discretion, therefore subject to change, but all will be notified beforehand if that need arises. This thread will be mainly run directly out of 2nd Ed AD&D rules, though I will be flexible with classes and any other potential dilemma brought to my attention.

Characters
  • Each player is required to submit a character sheet to me via PM, as well as introduce your character to the group in a post. This can include as much or as little background as you would like, though I do ask that you include your character’’s name, or at least something to call them by, their class, sex, and their race. Your character sheet need not include spell selections as those you will probably want to give me before each battle, unless you just want to have a generic set. Also please try to include special class abilities if at all possible in a special section for 2 reasons, #1 so I don’’t have to look them up, and #2 to make sure I apply all the abilities you are entitled to. If not included I will do my best to determine them.
  • Each Each character will have 85 points to distribute to their attributes, though no more than 18 on any unless with racial bonuses. If your strength is 18, I will roll a 1d100 for you to determine what bonuses you are entitled to, and you will be notified. Everything else is up to you, so good luck in your rolling
  • Each Each character will begin with 110,000 XP total to be divided among all classes if need be. I reserve right to allow more based on my discretion, but it would take some
serious convincing for a player to talk me into it.
  • Each Each character will be allowed one magical item(Subject to DM discretion). When the character is created that item is chosen. Characters will be allowed to start off with a regular set of mundane adventuring items and a weapon and up to plate mail armor. Each character starts out with 600 GP
  • Have fun!
How the arena works
  • Each Each Player will be allowed, for now, 1 fight a week. You may have up to 2 characters at a time, but for right now you may only fight once a week. (Sorry for the small # but I want to make sure I am not taking on more work than I am able to handle, I would like to allow everyone 2 fights a week eventually, maybe more, especially if we have a smaller # of people, but I ask that you all please bear with me as we get this started, and can then hopefully improve on it )
  • Each In each player on player fight the winner will be rewarded 600 GP and 1000 XP. The loser will receive 300 GP and 500XP. Player on creature fights will be allowed, the amount of GP and XP rewarded for winning or losing the fight will be determined beforehand and will be subject to the discretion of the DM as per the AD&D 2nd Ed Monstrous Manual.
  • Each After each battle Clerics will be standing by, but like everything else under Rapisdere’’s rule they will cost $$.
    • Cure light wounds = 25 GP
Cure serious wounds = 75 GP
Cure critical wounds = 100 GP
      Heal = 150 GP
      Neutralize poison =50 GP
      Cure Disease = 50 GP
To make this fair to all cleric’’s that use spells to heal themselves after combat will be missing those spells come their next round of combat (for instance a cleric uses 2 cure light wounds spells to heal the damage done to her in the last battle, in turn she will be docked 2 level 1 spells in the next battle, if anyone can think of a fairer way to do things please let me know. This will apply only if the character does not have any healing spells remaining.
  • Each Characters will be able to gamble their GP with either the DM or each other, though the DM must be aware of all the bets made between players so I can keep track of your GP, and two characters controlled by the same player may not gamble amongst each other, or fight each other, unless specially allowed by the DM.
  • The DM will determine the setting for each battle, and it is subject to change based on class/race of the combatants.
  • Each Magical and regular items will be available for sale, per the prior listing.
  • Have fun!
As DM I pledge to you the utmost unbiased integrity. All decisions will be made with as much fairness as I can offer. If any problems arise or if any questions arise please notify me in PM if possible. Sorry about the long list of rules, but I wanted to try and outline everything as thoroughly as possible so as to avoid future debates. Please enjoy.Revamped thanks to our friend Cyril Darkcloud. Many thanks to you mate!

OK an exciting time for me, the start of a new thread, just wanted to say a few things. Firstly I will give everyone a few days to introduce their characters, and let me get the items set up. There is about all you can imagine to do in the city, for a price. If you want to do something let me know and I will get you a price. Secondly, if there are some magical items/weapons anyone would like to suggest, now is the time for that via PM. Thirdly any suggested rule changes/amendments please submit those at this time via PM as well. Lastly if any changes are ever made in the original rules they will be boldfaced and I will make an OOC: outling the changes and possibly the reasoning.

A dwarf awaits outside the arena to be allowed passage.

His name is Batulúk. He is a male hill dwarf, who stands 4'4", and is 61 years old. His class is fighter, and he is Neutral Evil. He does not speak of the past, so nobody knows much about him. It is known only that he has travelled from the East, in search of his own private interests. He enjoys bar-room brawls and other chances that he gets to fight for what he calls "exercise".

OOC>>>Lemme know if I am supposed to put more info.

As the attendants viewed to gruff and dangerous looking dwarf with a mixture of suspicion and fear, they almost failed to note another figure enter, a tall man just a hair over six feet tall, but thin wizened and hunched over, his age was indeterminate by design, and his attire bespoke his profession, robes of a deep royal blue, and a dark purple cloak trimmed with fur, he had many pouches hanging from his belts and a gleam in his eye that spoke of power most men could not comprehend.

He slithered up to the bar and with a heavy accent asked for a glass of Kartakan Meekulbrau, a bitter wine that bards and minstrels claimed helped the voices of those who drank it. The accent as that of a dark and treacherous country, one where mages ruled autocratically and did not tolerate their words being mocked or their orders ignored. (the generic equivalent to a forgotten realms Red Wizard of Thay)

(btw he is a mage if you hadn't guessed, arrogant, and viscious, challenge him at your peril)

*sniffing loudly at being interrupted* "Who dares to address Lucius as a commoner," he pointedly looks around, and then down, emphasing the height diference between himself and Batuluk, he rises and looks down at the dwarf again, taking pains to stoop before speaking, his every action insulting the dwarf's common appearance, and diminutive size, "You sir, are an affront to my dignity, your bearing is insufferable and your stench deplorable, you likely cannot understand words with more than one syllable, therefore I shall rephrase myself posthaste, Me fight you. I accept your challenge, and will leave your corpse to rot for the carrion eaters, if I have no other use for it that is." (OOC: challenge accepted)
