Ok I've succeeded in enchanting 3-4 items so far. I understand the process
and how do it. What I'm not sure of is enchantment points.
1. What determines how many enchantment points an item has? It is the item,
the gem being used, your enchantment skill, or some combination thereof?
Some else perhaps?
2. How do I know what type of gem to use in order to "max out" an item's
potential enchantment points? In other words, lets say I have a charged
petty soul gem, and use it to enchant a potentially powerful item. But, if I
would have used a more powerful soul gem, I may have gotten more enchantment
points, right? (this is sort of tied in to #1)
3. The other night I enchanted an expensive ring with the healing spell. The
ring had 15 enchantment points available with a petty soul gem. I could slide
both magnitute bars all the way to the right without exceeding 15 points. It
would have healed for 100 points if I could have made it. I ended up with a
ring that could heal 7 points. I only used a small fraction of the 15 points.
My enchantment skill was 15 at the time. So the question is, does your
enchantment skill relate to a maximum number of enchantment points you can
actually use?

1)the item. The better the item, the more it will hold. Also item of the same type will in general be similar: cuirasses, gauntlests, boots hold only minor enchantments, rings and amulets and shields are the most powerful.

2)Better gems and more powerful souls will give more enchantment points. But the enchantment capacity of the object will be the same.

3)I don't know. I think the skill is simply the chance you have to succesfully enchant, regardless of the enchantment. I say so because I once enchanted a constant effect item (it was a daedric weapon) with a low skill - and constant effect are the most demanding in terms of enchantment power.

B_part, thanks for the reply.
With regards to #3, I think of it like this:
the more you push the slider bars to the right, the less your chance
of success.

But what do I know?

thanks again

When you enchant on PC you can decide the magnitude and duration of the spell cast: e.g. health restore 27pts for 10 sec.
Both these attributes of the spell are set by dragging sliding bars. I guess you do it differently on xbox.
