Does anyone know of any problems with trying to get Diablo 1 to play on battle.net.
I tried to get it to work on battle.net after having a good time on an ipx link. It doesn't seem to want to link up through the internet. Is my connection too slow? Can you play it on battle.net past level 2? On the spawn games on ipx link it would not let it past level 2. If I used the full version of the game does a multiplayer play past level 2?

When they made starcraft, the let spawns play multiplayer against a full install on an equal basis.
Unfortunately, when they made diablo the individual responisble for that decision was on lunch break and some marketing moron decided to sell more copies instead, by crippling the spawn function. I know a way around it - but its illegal, and I dont have a live source for the files. All you can do is get another CD and another key. ON your internet connection, diablo is high speed and Lag is one of the major killers of high level characters. I woudnt try it with less that ADSL or cable.

Thanks Andrewas,
It will be a couple of years before we get an adsl line to our home in rural Australia. I guess that playing any sort of multiplayer on the internet is out of the question, unless I win lotto & can afford a satellite service. On the ipx link that I was playing can you do a full multiplayer if you both have an original cd? |

Spawned games are only demos. They consist of the first 2 dungeon levels and nothing more. As for Bnet, you should definately be able to play Diablo 1 using a dial-up connection. I played on a crappy MSN connection for years with no problems. This game is 6 years old now; it was designed in an age before dsl and cable connections were around
I don't know why you are having problems connecting to Bnet. Perhaps you need to update the version of your game (or get a retail version if you don't have one... it's only 9 bucks in the US now). http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=adb0389p If it's still not working, make sure you have an Internet connection established before starting up Diablo. The game should automatically connect to the Internet by itself, but it sounds like it's not doing that for whatever reason. I don't know what else to say. If you have the latest version of the retail game and you're connected to the Internet, then Battle.net should work. I guess you could try changing what Gateway the game is connecting you through. You can do this by selecting the Change Gateway option at the Multiplayer screen. And by the way, you can play full multiplayer over IPX, Direct Connect, Modem, and Battle.net, and any mixture of these. So you can play the same characters by yourself offline and take those characters onto Bnet whenever you want.

Diablo 1 was good until the hackers invaded. Even in D2 they slipped by the no-hack defenses, until the next patch though,
D1 patches/updates start as soon as you try to log on B.net. I have no experience with IPX though. And i 2nd the fact that on the Spawn version you only get lvl 1 and 2 of the dungeon. Have fun with the Butcher ![]() Fortunatley this games is 50$ like its sequel, so you should go out to get it and install the full if you want.

Thanks,
I do have a retail copy that I bought locally for $5us. I have been playing it for a few weeks & have had a lot of fun. I installed a couple of spawn copies on a couple of my mates computers & played through an ipx link. We had so much fun that when I went to work I tried to link up again through battle.net. It didn't seen to work on the spawn so I will now try it with the full game & see how I go. The game is cheap enough that my mate is going to get his own copy. These hackers you've been talking about? Are they a source of concern? Can they get into my pc through battle.net? I use the avg virus checker, will this pick them up? |

In Diablo terms, hackers means cheaters. They are not real hackers in any sense of the word. They are just people on Battle.net who use cheat programs for equipment, super high stats, god mode (invincibility), auto-kill, etc. However as bad as that may sound, even if you encounter one of these "hackers", there is no threat to your computer or your Diablo character. They cannot alter anything on your side, although certain cheat programs will be able to scan your character and report back everything about your character, from stats to gear.
There are also the PK'ers (Player Killers) to worry about. They are usually also cheaters, but not always. In Diablo there is really no point in killing another player unless you enjoy ruining someone else' experience, which too many people obviously enjoy doing ![]() ![]() Here's a link that might help you learn the ropes a little better: http://www.arewehavingfunyet.com/diablo/newbie2.html

After playing d2/x for over 2 years online I have finally quit. Battle.net is a gaming server that was geared toward users with 56k. Unfortunately some people decide they need to cheat and "hack" to gain levels and win in public pvp games. Recently an outbreak of a thing known as pindlebot which in least detail is a way for a person to get godly items fast with out really having to play the game. It has cause great lag on b.net plus all the other junk out there making the game unenjoyable anymore. After watching all the patches come out for this game I will have to say this about 1.10.
It will stop alot of the crap going on for a short time. But, people will find a way to cheat and ruin the game for others. I hate people sometimes
