ok i havent played AD&D since i was in fourth grade and i cant really remember too much about the rules plus i only have a copy of BG2 and not the real thing so i have no manual.
so number 1: what is THACO?
and 2: whenever i try to cast find familiar it says can only be cast by a protaganist, how can i cast find familiar and actually recieve a familiar?

these questions might sound stupid and simple to u guys but im new to the BG series and i just cant remember some stuff from when i used to play AD&D
thanx in advance

Hello, Witherlain, and welcome to Ironworks!

First of all, THAC0 means "To Hit Armor Class 0"...it's the common method of determining the success of a hit based upon your "to hit" roll and the opponent's armor class. So if you have a THAC0 of 11, and your opponent's armor class is "zero", then you must roll an 11 or higher on a 20-sided die to hit him. Any non-zero armor class is subtracted, so if your opponent has an AC of 5, then your hit roll must be (11 - 5) = 6 or higher on a 20-sided die.

2. Only your main character (the Bhaalspawn) can have a familiar. To do this, your main character must be a mage, mage subclass, mage multi- or dual-class, or sorceror.

Hope this helps!

Welcome to Ironworks!

I'm not so much on THACO but...

The protaganist (the main character) is the only one who can actually succeed in casting find familiar, you don't actually FIND a familiar you just summon it.

One word of warning tho: If it dies you lose 1 point of constitution forever!

As far as I know, 2d4 means 2 four sided dice (in AD&D you use a lot of dice, all of which are not the como 6 sided dice we all know, you can have 4, 6, 8 10, 20, etc sides, So, yes, by multiplying the two you get the max damaga, but, it´s not the same to have 2d4 as 1d8, remember the minimunm you can get on a dice is 1 so the range for 1d8 is 1-8 while on 2d4 the range is 2-8.

Hope this helps

ADD used the following dices: d4,d6,d8,d10,d12,d20 and d100
d100 where actually two d10 examlpe:Say you rolled 2 and 5 that gives you 25
When a weapon does 1d8 damage that means that one 8 sided die is used to determin damage that is that the weapon can cause from 1 to 8 points of damage.2d8 means 2-16 points and so forth

Is the familiar added to inventory or is it a creature that follows you around like a summon?

If it is an inventory item then is it possible to get the familiar, export your character, create multi player game and put the character into a different slot? (Possibly giving you more than one familiar per party?)
