...or is the CRPG thing getting stale? Fallout got me away from the sims - Sim City, Civ. & MOO. It was a game that kept you immersed. And the first time I played, the Vault died because I didn't find the chip in time... I liked that. A time limit. Kept it tense. Fallout2 was great. Giant universe. A car. Wow.

Baldur's Gate & TOSC expansion were great, though they look almost childish compared to the latest games. But back then, the eye candy was incredible. And the game was excellent, if a little linear... Can't go to Baldur's Gate??? What was that about??? Newbies ain't gonna have the money to buy the good stuff anyway...

System Shock 2 just about caused a nervous breakdown. One of the most creepy and suspenseful CRPGs I ever played, though there wasn't much "role-playing."

Deus Ex was darn good. And Torment. And BG:II. Lots of hours in BGII...

But lately... None of the newer games have grabbed me by the shorties.

Dungeon Seige? Please, it was just cotton candy...

Divine Divinity? 5 years late...

NWN? Flat. It is just flat. Hack. Hack. Hack... If I wanted to play Diablo, I'd spend $3.98 at the bargin bin.

Arcanum? It was great, but way out of balance...

Wizardry 8? Okay. It was very good, but I got caught-up in all the character building/perfect-party/perfect-character stuff.

I mean, am I just being too critical? Or are the games just falling short?

sounds like you need a break from gaming, while i generaly agree with a lot of what is said, they are still great games worthy of being played.

CRPG are getting re-used alot more then normal, same plots, same twists, same old crap in a different wrapper. Frankly there is only so much they can do, even games that let you do what you want end up reapeating themselves.
Take the game I'm currently playing Gothic, you can wander around, beat the crap out of anyone (and only kill them if you choose to) within the main quest, only annoying bit is you are crap to start off with, can't fight can't cast spells, can't picklocks, steal, etc and you have to pick it all up along the way. I guess it adds an egde to the game but hell being kill by the weakest mosters starts to get annoying after a while. Yet still you got the same quest as ever, get this, kill that, find whatever and apart from lerning new skills there is little character development, it gets dull.
I guess Online playing against other people will be they way to go as then things won't be predicable and development come from human interaction but damn it cost money.

I'm with you and what you say is correct, But maybe just maybe we will be saved.
right now there is a group of D&D Pro's that have been developing a new 3-D CRPG for the PC called (The Grayhawk Chronicles and the temple of Elemental Evil),taken from the famous series of books. The same people that produced Arcanum are making this game but read what they have to say it may give you something to look forward to in the next six months. I hope this game is what an CRPG should be, so far it looks to be. check out the screen shots they are impressive and let us hope that this game will start a whole new trend in CRPG Games and the way you play them. We need excitement and challenge not fetch and run around bull%*#+.

Try Morrowind, but other than that, get a break from gaming. Yes, you will get bored eventually, so spend time reading, or take hikes or go down to the city if your near one.

I dunno, I'm still enjoying IWD and IWD2 as well as having a blast with downloading mods for NWN, so I'm still quite happy with them.

It's just you

I personally enjoyed most of what you listed.

NWN *can* be much more than a hack and slash. I'm working on a Mod that requires you to THINK a lot, and has a story..

Anyway, CRPG's are here to stay! NWN add on's are coming, an AD&D Greyhawk game is as well! It's all in the Eye of the Beholder... (HEY! That was a cool RPG too!) lol
