Terrorism strikes close to home

UNC Chapel Hill was the target of a terrorism attempt on the lives of nine students when a graduate student decided to get a Jeep Cherokee and run it as fast as he could into the students. Luckily, he did not kill anyone. Why? He said he did it for the glory of Allah, in retribution to a student newspaper running cartoons.

How did they find him? He called on his cell phone (heard this on the radio) and reported what he had done, telling the police exactly where he was.

Well, I really don't agree with the actions of religious fanatics of any kind, but to be fair, those messages would be more efffective if people stoped putting their profet on them. They would have been more effective if the artists had used some random muslim guy instead.

It's as if someone wanted to say something about christians, but put a big anti-christ image on the front and put the actual message in small behind the anti-christ message.

In general, when you want to show someone a sensitive thruth, you don't want to offend him first.

The action of today's Muslims shouldn't be attributed to their main religious guy either. It's as if someone wanted to send the message that some priests abuse childrens and did so by making a picture of Jesus abusing a small buy. Now THAT would also be offensive for no reason, it would just detract from your message, Jesus obviously never did this.

Muslims can't depict their profet because then it would turn him from a religious figure to a comercial one. They don't want that to happen.

I want more Muslims to realise the hypocrisy of claiming to strive for peace while doing all those violent thing they've been doing. I want rational Muslims to realise those extremist are bad for them and I hope they will take step to fix the problem. I hope there will one day be friendship between the middle east and the west.

I don't see how this can be accomplished by adding fuel to the fire and by blinding them with rage. I think we need a channel of comunication, and caricatures could have been part of it, if it had been handled better.

I just heard some more news on this. The truck he used as a weapon was a rental...rented that morning for the sole purpose of hoping that this SUV would do the most damage to a group of 17 people. Nine were injured, 1 moreso than the rest.
Also, there is a debate going on whether or not this should be classified as "terrorism". Some people say that its just attempted murder because he does not namely belong to a group that is known for terroristic acts, but by definition and the reason he did this says that he does fit the bill.

Actually it's more to do with idolatry, sunni islam (much like early christianity was oppsed to images of Christ because of idolatry fears) is violently opposed to any depiction of ole Mo, Shia has a long tradition of depicting him respectfully through art, and what seems to be getting their knickers in a twist is that 1 infidels drew the cartoons, and 2 they do not kiss mo's ass sufficiently and for sunni islam, 3, it's a depiction of ole Mo.
