For the last couple of days, I can't explain how this happened, but there's a file missing from my comptuer when I boot up that allows me to browse the icons on my desktop, menu bar, or anything at all. Last time I was on it was about three days ago, all I did was shut it off after finishing something up and when I rebooted, it said "Windows is unable to locate the file BROWSEUI.DLL, please install the application and restart your computer." I'll click OK and when Windows comes up, all I get is my wallpaper, none of my desktop icons, no menu bar, nothing at all.
Anyway that this can be fixed? |

Add or remove any programs lately? are you able to run any virus scans or anything like that? Sounds like windows is hosed, might need a repair or reinstall.

so, you access things through Ctrl+Alt+Delete or what?
If at all posible, try reverting to a Restore point 4 or more days ago.

You can download that dll from the internet. After googling it, this is the first one I found.
browseui.dll I have had to download a dll before that suddenly went missing, and the only thing to do is put the new one where the old one was supposed to be sitting. [ 08-16-2005, 02:58 PM: Message edited by: Larry_OHF ]

Ctrl+Alt+Delete didn't do anything, and I've ran Windows in Safe Mode and the Last Known Configuration that's worked, still nothing though. |

Exploder strikes again.
Attempt to boot in 'safe' mode. Attempt to search for file on HDD. If not present, attemp a search from your OS cd. Find file, extract and install, then re-boot normal. Problem solved. However, you may not find the file. Your machine dependent, attempt to download it from the net whilst in safe mode. If no-go, then download file from elsewhere, and transport it to your machine and run it in "Safe" mode, re-boot normal. Problem solved. 'LAST' resort; boot into safe-mode, do a system restore from a previous good day in the history of your rig. WARNING A lot of folks experience unwanted peculiarities after the restore.

What OS version are you using? XP or 9x?
Are you using FAT32 or NTFS for your file structure? If you're using FAT32 with XP, download the .dll using a good machine, and unzip it onto a clean floppy. It's about a 1MB file, so you'll need to put it on a floppy other than your boot diskette. Boot your machine using a DOS boot disk, and transfer the replacement .dll from the floppy to C:\WINDOWS\System32 If you're running NTFS, you'll have to create boot disks or a CD that will recognize NTFS when in DOS. You might be able to transfer the file over a LAN, if you have one available. It's rather unusual that this file would become corrupt or missing all by itself. I would suspect some form of spyware/virus has found it's way onto your system.
