My dad was considering getting satellite internet for when we move, and I was discussing its connection speed with my brother last evening over dinner. From what he says (and I have yet to research it) it's a good deal faster than dial-up but slightly slower than DSL.
I told him about something I had heard awhile back about satellite being shite for online gaming (such as mmorpgs, ect) because he delay from the satellite to the dish or whatever caused significant lag. He said he wasn't sure, and would check it out for me, but I figured I'd just post it here. I'd research it myself, but it's 4am in the morning

well it is very expensive! Isn't DSL an option for you? And it doesn't speed up everything, Im pretty sure what you heard is true, thats probably the two main reasons why satellite broadband isn't widely used: its expensive and inefficient.

From what he told me, theyve improved te technology and it's cheaper. I guess before it was only fast on the download and slow on the upload, but now its fast on both.
As for DSL, yes we do get it here, but we're moving in a few months, and we won't be able to get it there.

Out of the typical home services (not including leased lines and such) Dialup is slowest but cheap, Satellite is next fastest and most expensive of the lot, DSL is third, and cable is the fastest (by far in my experience).
We've currently got DSL but are going to go back to cable soon... DSL is just too slow. As far as gaming, satellite will be unsuitable for gaming due to the long delays (lag). It's ok for browsing because once the transfer starts it goes quick, but getting that first packet takes too long for realtime gaming. The last time I looked satellite was US$100 per month for the first year then about US$60 per month after that. We're paying $50 per month for DSL, and when we had Cable (before we moved) it was $45 per month. |

As I understand it, Satellite uses a sort of Bandwith. As long as you have bandwith left, its fast, but after youre out, its about as fast as a modem
Note: Im not positive on this, so some confirmation would be nice [ 07-29-2004, 03:45 PM: Message edited by: Raistlin Majere ]
