Well I also didn't get an ipod because of the battery life issue. I have myself a Creative Xen Xtra 60gb model, and it is a beast. It can hold 20,000 songs a good quality, and more at perfectly reasonable quality. It doesn't support OGG but it supports WAV, MP3 and WMA which is fine. It costs a fair bit though.
I would obviously recommend it to you but if you can't afford it/don't want the big cappacity then get yourself a Rio Karma. They are 20gb, and small and stylish, still retaining (I think) the title of smallest hard drive based mp3 player. Very nice.
