Ehrm, Mae'Var is evil, but he is also extremely STUPID!!!

Smart evil people know the power of sometimes seeming like a nice and reliable guy.

i almost always play good(so much so that i made my solo sorcerer evil and then forgot to play him evil) but i have made a evil party(i think the pc is a mage thief and then the usual evil npcs, unfourtantely i haven't gotten valen to work so no valen) and a all nuetral party(pc is a cleric of helm, then anomen(starts lawful nuetral), cernd with upgrade, haerdalis, jan, and nalia)

my evil party is severely lacking in tanking without valen, but the nuetral party is pretty well rounded, plenty of clercism between me and cernd and anomen, anomen tanks suffiecently, cernd w/ the upgrade is an overpowering tank, just got haer so haven't used him to much, jan provides thieving an backup mage, and nalia a straight mage.

The Darkest Day mod brings a lot more potential to playing an evil party. there are also a few other mods out there that give you a single NPC each, some of them are evil, most of them are well made.

alternately, use the multiplayer trick to create your own characters and either create a whole party, or just a few characters to complement standard game NPCs. Ie you want to use korgan, viccy and edwin but you also want an evil thief ? make one in multiplayer and move the game back to single player

I think the game is very much geared towards a good party. All put together you will, as opposed to the real world, be better off doing good deeds. With a high reputation you get discounts on goods. Also there are a lot more characters for a good party than there is for an evil one.

The thing is this: if you complete quests with the pure and simple motive of getting the most possible reward, chances are you're going to have to be nice to someone along the line. If you do, then that compromises your Evil principles. Worse, you'll usually end up getting a Reputation bonus as well. This makes your Evil Party restless, as they think you're doing good things and they don't like that.

Now, you can be Evil, and aim for the immoral road; but not only will the amount of £££ you get be shafted, you won't get any Rep bonuses, that means items at shops will cost more. All in all, it's a bum rap.

I'm waiting one day for the dedicated Evil Mod that adds in more Evil dialogue, more Evil options for evil players that allows you to claim the lion's share of the cash, turn Imoen into a Neutral Evil character (so having her as your sidekick doesn't feel... weird) and throw in one or two extra NPCs just for fun. I'm trying my own hand at modding... but I'm a cack-handed fool!

I agree that the game is geared toward playing as a good character. After all, your arch-rival is teamed up with a vampire...
