You're wasting your time if you look at that offhand weapon as "an extra attack"

You're best off with something that increases the main weapon's power (Crom Faeyr) or something that makes you better protected (The Equalizer).

IMO, The Equalizer is THE BEST offhand weapon in the game. It's got a ton of immunities, which are even better for a solo character, and it's bonuses are actually added to the main-hand weapon also!

When I think of off-hand weapons, I think of, in no particular order:
Axe of Unyielding, Scarlet Ninja-To, Crom Faeyr, The Equalizer, Hindo's Doom, Spectral Brand, and my personal fave, the Defender of Easthaven, which might be an interesting alternative in the off-hand, particularly when combined with the Hardiness HLA.

I'm surprised none of the veterans so far mentioned Kundane or Belm as candidates for an off-hand weapon; especially when you consider all the calculations done in the past.

Also, what you should use in your main hand depends on what opponent you are facing. If you are fighting hordes of Undead, you will want to dualwield Runehammer and Azuredge. For Boss fights, Flail of Ages in your main-hand is your best bet. For fighting off dozens of thugs, the Axe of Unyielding is wicked sick. Etc...

The reason I personally did not mention Kundane or Belm is that I load my characters up with tons of GWW attacks. I'm not a critical strike kind of guy. Also, since the fighter is going solo, immunities and resistances are probably a better bet than attack power.

normally i'd agree with the extra attack off-handers but in my current party (yay me for a re-install and the holiday . . .) only valygar and jahiera dual wield and jah' gets scimitars and valygar's not going to use a short sword

oh yeh - and i wish you could dual wield azuredge but you can't 'cos it's a throwing weapon

i've never played ToB through so i don't know how good AoU is but any power build has got to include Ages surely . . .

I do not go for CStrike either, but GWW and GDb. GDb is excellent against traditionally hard enemies like Illithids and Beholders.

Frell, if you think about it, dual-wielding is not exactly the best setup for soloing anyway. A shield confers so much more defensive abilities, like the Shield of Harmony, or the Sentinel Shield. Even the Fortress Shield has its' shining moments in certain areas, and the Shield of Reflection is just a Godsend in the ToB Final Fight.

what about:

solo fighter using grand mastery patch has 5 attacks:

1 prime + 1 off + 1 (lvl 7 and 13) + 1.5 GM + 0.5 gauntlets of extra specialisation

cast improved haste from ring of gax, raising number of attacks per round to 10

cast critical strike.

you now have a greater wirlwind attack with all critical hits

Actually, maybe you could dual weild Azuredge. I mean, you *can* make it do damage like a melee weapon...

In plain "vanilla" BG you can't, although I seem to remember a mod that had that as one of its components. I don't remember which one, though...

ok, new question lol

in your own opinion, for a solo fighter, what is THE single best dual wielding combination?

i am pushed to find a greater combo than Axe+5 main and crom fayer off. Flail of ages is a good party weapon but the fact you cannot haste the character holding it really limits it... so we are kind of looking for any combination NOT using the flail of ages.

Lets get some veterans into the forum
