The process of crating magical items is a taxing one, not everybody can make an enchanted weapon. That's why there are not very many powerful items just lying about. And you will certainly not find an axe at the dead mosquito swarm .

Thanks Vedran

1) Good to know...Im finding that this seems to be a somewhat more intensive game than either D.S. or Diablo. So more quests are in order instead of killing beasts? I went and found whats his names boots but kept them rather than completeing the quest!

For major NPCs the amount and type of loot you gain is the same every game. The person with the Helm of Infravision will always have that item, regardless of who checks out the body. Once you've played BG for awhile, you'll know exactly where to go, for what, and who currently has it.

Im not sure about the helm thing, but i believe that the mage had enough lore to identify what seemed like a normal helmet. Do you know what lore is? Because we can explain with more detail about this.

The only helm of infravision can be found on the corpse of an un-ladylike female cleric. You've likely picked it up at an earlier occasion.

I second the Lore idea. Grendal, one of the nice little tidbits of ToSC (Tales of the Sword Coast, the expansion to BG1) is that all Unidentified items are tinted blue--so you know that they're magical, and you don't know what the enchantments are yet. So, your learned Mage picked up the Helmet, examined it, and had enough Lore to recognize it as a Helm of Infravision. Your dumb Fighter, on the other hand, looked at it and saw nothing but a Helmet, and since you don't have ToSC installed, there was no blue tint to tell him otherwise.

Vital Tip: If you ever pick up an item that has "NOT IDENTIFIED" at the top of its Description, do NOT put it on!

Eh, didn't he say that the fighter found nothing, while the mage found the helmet? What does that have with unidentified items?

Okay earlier in this post someone asked about if time influences the game. I have one question for you, is Minsc in your group? If so yes time matters and you better do the quest he wants or else (I learned the hard way). This is the only example I know about.

Time matters in all NPC quests: These are those quests that must be undertaken in order to get an NPC in your party, shortly after getting the NPC in your party, or in order to keep an NPC in your party. But almost all other quests in the game don't care about time at all: The only 2 that spring to my mind are the Poison quest and the Halruaan Skyship quest.

The general rule is: If they give you a specific timeframe in which the quest must be completed, OR if they are a recruitable NPC, then they mean it, and you should get your butt in gear. But if they just give you some general sense of urgency ("You must do X quickly!"), it's usually safe to blow them off for a few hours....or days....or months.

Hey folks I have been away for a couple o days.....I think with the helmet thing there were probably 2 bodies side by each and I just missed it the first time....and yes I do know what lore is but have yet to find anything my particular characters have been able to identify. Its payday tomorrow so I might have to go get the expansion. By loading it now will I have missed much? And yes I HAD Minsc in my party but unfortunatly he blew a gasket because I was taking to long (I was actually finally on my way to go get his friend) so my other party members did him in....which really pissed me off cause I just bought him some plate! Another thing that kinda sucks is that I have to babysit my party members! I guess some o the members are different classes and if I dont keep them separated they will eventually piss each other off and a royal rumble will erupt!

Keep an eye on alignments and you should be able to avoid most of that.

Anyway, install the expansion ASAP, the new areas are fun and the expansion has a few new features, like highlighting unIDed items and suchlike. You should be able to install it midgame, IIRC it will convert your savegames to TotSC format when you install it.

You wont have missed anything by installing it midgame, the new areas are for high-level characters.
