I always find it sad when I come to the end of a brilliant book, unlike a record it just aint the same on the second read. LOTR however i've read and read and read (just finished yesterday) and there is always something new in it. A little nuance that you pick up on, or important detail that was missed. I guess that is why it's the best book written. (IMHO)

This really belongs in the Books etc. Forum, so I'll move it there.

Sure, its coherent as a doctrine - but is it proveable? The Republic falls into that interesting category of texts I think all fit together nicely (if all of Plato's assertions are true then the Republic would surely work), but its making sure his assertions are true thats the tricky bit! The impossible bit, some people might say...

As for me, I've just finished "Against a Dark Background" by Banks. Its horribly bleak, but incredibly gripping. I don't think I've ever read a book that quickly, or at least not one of that size. Currently I'm reading "The Sirens of Titan" by Vonnegut, which is a little bit of a dissapointment really - I've only ever read "Slaughterhouse Five" by him, and compared to that Sirens is decidedly mediocre. But thats just my opinion...

Good stuff if you like Space Opera! I'm currently reading War of Honor, the new hardcover (with the CD! )

It's shaping up to be a good read...
