Honestly that part has bothered me since I started hearing about it. It really set off my "Yeah, right," alarm. Hollywood wants to make a movie about a Samurai, let 'em go find a Japanese man for the lead role, not Tom Cruise. Maybe it's just me, but it seems kinda racist, and if I'm wrong, I apologize in advance. </font>[/QUOTE]It's a classic storytelling device... to allow the audience an insight into a culture or a history, you have the character who knows nothing - as he comes to understand things, so does the audience.

The very, very, ending pissed me off something chronic. A good film but it chickened out at the last minute from what would otherwise have been quite a powerful moment.

could be on the real last part.. it was good for me but i guess it can be a little anti-climatic for some.

The fact that Tom Cruise won! I mean, come on! Is that even historically accurate? Did Japan really hold off the encroaching power of capitalism! No! It didn't!

Too many exclamation marks, but suffice to say that that film would have been excellent and moving if they'd both just have died on the battlefield and it had ended there. Its sad, but that signifies more what happened in real life - capitalism did destroy a lot of ancient lifestyles and put a lot of people through abject hardship, and is still doing so.
