As I said above all people will react to MSG is the dose is high enough. Some researchs have shown that you need 30mg MSG/kg body weight to react to it though. But of course it could also be a registry error!

MSG is a flavor enhancer, it seems to make some foods taste better, even though MSG itself has no real flavor. I cook with it often, but do not use megadoses. The only side effect I have ever been able to attribute to MSG is headaches if I get too much in too short a period.

I am betting that the reaction you had Larry was ordinary food poisoning, they probably slipped up and you got some salmonella.

EDIT: I just read Finn's comments, well he said it all before me, and I hope everyone notes that he said "GOOD" cooks don't need to resort to it Which is why you find it in my cooking

Personally speaking (and this is completely unscientific) I tend to find I have worse hangovers if my wandering feet have strayed into a Chinese takeaway than any other purveyor of post-imbibing victuals.

However, another explanation coud be that I only go for Chinese takeaways when really drunk

Hmmm... my lunches have to be settled outside home and the food that's being sold out here is packed with MSG And it's not restricted to Chinese food... it's EVERYWHERE

Fortunately, I don't suffer from any side-effects, except an insatiable thirst for water But, I've heard that MSG can erode a person's mental alertness after a while and can cause some people's hair to drop Anyway, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll be able to hold these off for a long while yet. Otherwise... pray for me, Larry. I'll need it!

I really cannot add to what Willow has posted except to say that my two favorite things to say at the Chinese Restaurant when the family dines there, the meal is over, and they present the fortune cookies, is to pretend to read my fortune and say, "Your request for no MSG was ignored." Galadria hates MSG. The other thing is to pretend to read the fortune and say, "Help, I'm a prisoner in a Chinese bakery."

ROTFL Mouse. Yes I bet that may have something to do with the hangover.
