That's not entirely accurate, since it varies from province to province and state to state. If the officer doesn't show up and doesn't file for an extension then you win.

In the U.S. streets need to be re-evaluated every 10 or so years. If you fight a ticket and the street has not been checked in its proper time it is null and void.

Good luck with it, Yorick! If the sign is there, they may say you should have seen it as you drove up to the intersection, but if you take pics as you come up and show it's not that easy to notice, you may convince a judge to drop it or reduce the fine.

If not, it's going to cost more in court costs and lawyer fees than what the ticket initially was. All in all, if there is a sign that you can see from 100 feet or so from the intersection, that isn't obstructed by something the city would be responsible for, I'd say it's going to be cheaper to pay the ticket.
