Hmm - well, I have used Boot Camp to successfully put Windows on my Mac now (just 50GB allocated, though). This means that I will be able to use DC again (haven't tried it in Wine yet - I don't even know what Mac users use for paint programs yet), but another problem is that I have no table to put my PC on yet

Interesting about the various engines to play the Infinity engine games on Linux - I took a look at some, and they do seem to be in various stages of development. Too bad that Temple of Elemental Evil never was as successful as the Infinity Engine games - it was rather well done in my opinion, although the bugs did make it hard to run at first (I think that is where most of my problems were regarding Wine and VirtualBox, although the latter failed when 3D appeared, anyway).

(ToEE was hard to run in boot camp Windows, too - the copy protection seems to be a pain (I of course own this game) - I was able to play by patching it to version 2 and using a non-official patch from the Sorcerer's something-or-other site, plus the CD... just in case you ever decide to buy the game (It's only $10 or something like that))

Is ToEE 2e or 3e? (Wow, that question looks cryptic. )

I think it was 3.5e (3e and 3.5e are basically the same to me - except gnomes are bards or something?)

3.5 fixed a lot of little errors with 3e.

Some day I'll track down a copy of ToEE. Maybe I can get my hands on my nephew's...

'Tis a fun game! Most NPCs (that join the party) are annoying as they tend to loot everything (take all the good stuff) and then overencumber themselves retardedly... But you don't HAVE to take them

Maybe this is a bug that has been patched or can be patched. I know early versions of NeverWinter Nights had similar problems. The patches made a world of difference, though.

Strangely, it seems the 3rd (and last) patch just makes things worse so I went back and repatched the 2nd instead, finally adding a non-official patch (which seems to have some other stuff as well, including higher level caps). The main thing the 3rd patch fixed was a looting bug (you couldn't loot after battle), but the non-official patch fixes that, too.

(You can try the demo of ToEE for free (it gives you a whole level to play without restrictions, but PCs are pregenerated) - the looting bug is present there, too, but you can just loot during battle If you are bored, you can also kill monsters until you get to the maximum level of the game (10) and do almost whatever you like, within the already-mentioned limits)

The level cap is only 10?

I was reading a blog about a DM who runs a 1e/OSRIC campaign with unlimited level advancement and has a player with level 97 character. I'm guessing it's got to be Monty Haul or a joke.

I'll have to look into finding a download and give it a whirl.

Yeah, level 10 - no prestige classes or anything, either, so although you can change classes as per 3.5e rules, there isn't much reason to do so (maybe fighter/rogue at best?).

At least in 1e, hp advancement was rather minimal after "name level" (9-11 or so) for most classes; in 3e+, hp advancement continues normally forever it seems, so a high-level PC could probably wrestle a gargantual dragon down with his pinky...

Let's see, a 99th level barbarian with a CON of 18 could have something like 783 maximum HP. Numbers like that sound more like World of Warcraft.

I was going to download this last night, but then I saw how big the demo was...218 MB. I would have stayed up much later than I wanted.

What really surprises me is that there is not a Linux game for AD&D 1e or 2e. Every LInux afficianado I know who is over the age of 30 has a history of AD&D, and for most it seems a fond history. All the younger folk mostly have rpg memories of computer games it seems.
