I was thinking some more about the opening sequence. And unless my mind is playing tricks on me, the patterns in the early part of it looked a lot like the shot latter in the movie looking down the core of Zion. And the 'pull back' effect ended in Neo's dream of Trinty's fate.

Well, I don't think it's important that it's Zion, but I think it is important that all the little matrix streams formed a figure that was a working machine -- looked like the central core of some generator or something, with a spinning wheel and pole.

As Morpheus said, the previous One could change what he wanted inside the Matrix. How do we know that the Architect isn't simply the previous incarnation of the One? You broke it, you fix it. Fortunately, I can fall back on the conclusions from quantum mechanics which states that all possibilities are potentially true, at least until you make an observation and only one possibility becomes actualized. I could be right, you know....
The same can be said of what we see with Neo in the Architect's room. All possible answers exist, but when the question is asked only one answer happens. Of course, the Oracle would place more importance on why a certain answer was given and not care about the answer itself. In short, Neo needs to understand why he joined with Smith at the end of the first movie; this was the one eventuality that I don't think anyone foresaw.</font>

I don't think it was necessarily unforseen. If it was, it didn't seem to bother the Oracle or Architect much. Maybe the previous incarnations of "the one" did the same.

I was noodling on this on my bus ride into work today. I was thinking along similiar lines, but I think Smith's goal is something a little larger then just remaking the Matrix. He would rather see all the humans wiped out, remember his speech to Morpheus when he unplugged for the first time during his interrigation.
