Use a standard longsword, that will make for more fun.
Always remember playing p&p and if you were lucky enough to get a +1 sword it was like christmas has come. Kids to day, +4 this, + 5 that.........you are all spoilt!

regarding that daystar sword found at the city gates, it's really nice and REALLY easy to steal from that lich when you're just starting out and not ready for any terrifically harsh battles but need a good sword. a HASTED thief can pretty much run into the lich tomb in back of the tavern hidden in shadows, pick the lock on the chest in the back, grab daystar and get out before that lich gets a spell off. Come back and kill him with a little more experience.
