Neither side is guiltless nor blameless, Grojlach. So perhaps you could follow you own advice and avoid "resorting to insults".

To be perfectly honost, I didn't find the "letter" particularly funny either - but I don't see any reason to insult those who did.
Erm... What? I'm calling out John D. for insulting others, and you manage to interpret it in such a manner that I'm the one who does the insulting? I think you missed my point; perhaps my words are somewhat ambiguous but I disagree with John's insults, regardless of my political affiliation. Heck, I couldn't even care less whether a joke is "left" or "right" with that in mind; if it's good, it's good, if it stinks, it stinks - but that doesn't mean you are free to insult those who think it stinks, or, the other way around, to insult those who think it's funny.

Your post would have been fairer and more logical if it were directed at John D. Harris, in fact.

Well, I'm no Bush fan, but I found the it very funny. I was like, damn, who is this poor guy...then I read the part about living in a hole in the ground and I was like 'doh!'

I absolutely *loathe* Bush... but even I found this amusing.
My feeling is that if it's funny it's funny. It could be directed at me or my beliefs, but if it's funny, I don't care. Humor is an art. I think that might also be what Grojlach is sort of saying, or not. Either way, I've said my part.

Despite it being obviously politically bent and a fairly stupid joke, I found it quite fun.

Those of you who insult those of us who found the joke a might bit funny should at least recognize one thing: it at least offers a perspective into the soldier's mind. This friend of mine has to pay for internet time and gets precious little of it. We are instructed not to send him email unless it's important, becuase of his limited time. Given that limited time, he thought this joke was worth forwarding to the US. So, take it for what it is: a windo into the soldier's life.

Tell me Timber, where in this thread is there an insult directed at those who thought the letter was funny, I can't find it. Perhaps you can point it out to me. There was only one insult that I could find here and it was directed at those of us who didn't chuckle at the "humor".

Here is the thing, the first time I read it I was shocked, and thought it was a little disturbing. I did not however read the last two lines.

So than I was going to post something about this poor man, and looked at the last two lines and said Oh!! So it was kind of funny in a twisted since. People have varying degrees of humor. Some people you like the movie "Very bad things" may like this humor, I found the movie to twisted for my taste.

I haven't insulted anyone and don't really care if anyone else finds the "joke" funny. Different strokes for different folks and all that.

A real shame is this most letter could be quite true... if the signatory was different. If written by an American, it wouldn't be a Bush bashing letter at all either, but a run-down of honest reasons to vote his ass out of office.

Skywalker already noted that it seems the only people insulted so far in this thread were the people who did not find the "joke" funny. I'm one of them and if anyone has a problem with that...too bad.

BTW- Some of the emails I have seen from soldiers are more along the lines of..."I can't wait to get the hell out of here and get back home to family and friends...." The only insight I have into this person's mind is wondering why one would waste precisous email time to send a joke and wonder if they realize just how true any given American father may generally find the letter. Well whatever the motives-too each their own I suppose.

Dont' make us out to be the "bad guys" because we dont share the same sense of humor in this situation.

I tried to post this last night, but I think it was lost in e-ether. "insulting" was overstating on my part.

Please don't let my mis-speak let you ignore the valid point -- re: the soldier's viewpoint.
