As was stated earlier when this country is hit with Disasters there never seems to be any aid coming this way.
Industrialized countries like, the USA, generally don't recieve much disaster relief aid as they're have enough money to pay for the damages.

Unless they are being told they need to send more overseas and not to be so stingy!

Some times just the offer is nice.
It shows a spirit of reciprocation and some shared compassion....if it is alwyas with the hand out you come to the door....your image is....somewhat less than welcome ya know?

I don't know about aid in terms of money but I do know that Canada sends firefighters to the States every summer when forest fires are raging.. also sent firefighters and paramedics after 9-11 and relief workers went during the hurricanes as well. So I don't know if we sent the States money but we did send people to help.

[/QUOTE]Not only that, but industrialized countries tend to have decent infrastructure to give relief (provincial/state and municipal governments, non-profit organizations, etc), and many countries that get and need disaster relief have no real way to distribute the items they receive.

Most importantly, industrialized countries tend to have insurance. It's one thing to have your shop or house wiped out when it's covered by insurance, and a whole different thing when it's uninsured.

I imagine you can get Tsunami insurance on the Island since Port Alberni was hammered by one. Insurance companies are probably getting a few more inquiries than usual about it.

You know what Djin....you are exactly right...and in my eyes...unlike the narrow definitions of the UN....That is aid....it is a reciprocal deal for us being neighbors and all as we send people north on a regular basis as well...but neither of those is counted by the UN as foreign aid....remember...it has to go through their accounting system for it to count.

Im thinking that even if they did offer it...when the tsunami hit they would just claim bankruptcy and default on their payments.....thats what the Insurance Agencies did when a large part of Florida got nailed a few years ago by a large Hurricane.....and I don't doubt it is happening to the Florida victims again this year.

Noted today:

A. the 4 Million $$ for aid from the Eu has not made it in country yet....apparently it's still being debated.

B. An Entire Naval Fleet from the US is rushing on scene as we speak and a Marine Expeditionary Unit is already on the ground giving comfort and aid. (none of this counts as Aid by the UN)

C. Several hundred US charities are collecting millions of pounds of material to be shipped (by the first available military transport) to the affected region (none of which counts to the UN)

D. Sri Lanka has rejected aid from Israel because of some military personnnel are trying to help....which begs the question...will they reject US offers of aid as there will undoubtedly be some Jewish Military Pilots flying the cargo planes?

some nations really are ingrates.

I don't know where y'all get your information, but let me set something straight here. I can't speak for the other European countries, but the Netherlands alone is donating roughly 35.000.000 € in cash, of which 25.000.000 comes directly from the government, and the rest has been donated into an account by the collective people of the Netherlands in just a matter of days, and it's still counting. That's 35.00.000 € coming from a nation with 16.000.000 people, so you can stop complaining that you're the only one lending a helping hand.

I was just talking about raw cash btw, i won't even mention the food and medicine programs that are making overtime, and the volunteers for aid on the spot. And guess what.... they do that every time when somewhere on this planet a disaster occurs, but apparently not everyone notices that.

Question Mark

No one is discounting contributions made by the Netherlands, johnny. The point here is that very early into the aftermath and clean-up stages someone from the UN called the US "stingy" becuase that UN representative didn't think we were giving enough cash, despite the other goods and services that will be provided to the survivors.

The UN should thank its lucky stars we still bother with that has-been and needless entity. Personally, I think we should pull out of it completely, kick all the UN dignitaries out of the country, and let them whine about it somewhere else. Without our money and support they wouldn't last very long.

In case you can't tell, I loathe the UN.
