I would, as Cerek mentioned, take this back to HR and try to have it resolved to your satisfaction. You are also entitled to file complaints.

While it's great that you and your friend have decided not to let this ruin your friendship, doesn't the sneaking around during lunch or after work and the saying "hi" only after you're sure no one is looking part almost make it seem like the HR people are right? It's important that you think about it that way because people who know what's going on and see you doing these things will start to wonder why you're sneaking around if its just friendship.

Don't give them that satisfaction. Keep your friendship(s) and your dissatisfaction regarding this unfair and unreasonable action on the part of HR in the open and on appeal.

Gotta say I agree with Larry, Cerek and Ronn's assesments here. One thing I'd be sure to do is check that employee rules/handbook carefully.

Geez, I think I'd be furious about this if it happened to me! I'd want to ask the HR if you're allowed to speak to anyone at all! I'm curious to know, is it 'inappropriate' if you lunch with a man? Or with a crowd of people? Is it 'inappropriate' if you bring in a box of donuts and share them with anyone? Sheesh!

They just assume that Males can't have female freinds without there being some sort of pysical invouvlment... It's obviouse that the people who runt he company dont know about you or your relationship they just know that a man and a woman communicate frequently and for the good of the company don't want to have their work hours spent for personal reasons, and so down the chain of command they lay their orders to the people who run human recources and order that no further interation be possible, now if you and a male freind were having such activities it would be most likeely that nothing like this would happen, the same if she had a female freind...

I suppose you can only get used to it, or file a complaint with some logical thinking left-winged lawyers...

that is simply how the business world works, it's competative, it's capitalism, and it's a little peice of communism right in your own backyard which happens every day. The individual isn't important any more, it is how the group functions as a whole, and if one peice in a puzzle appears too close to another, the "constructors" can easily have them seperated, even if appearances are deceiving...

Sleep well America...

All that I was gonna say has already been said it Larry's post, and then some. Unlucky man, that's life. Shouldn't mean you should stand for it though.
