I read that he was filming a documentary on the ocean's most dangerous animals. He passed a little too close above this stingray, and it reacted... RIP.

Apparently his wife has now been told, and she's told the kids.

'Tis a sad day, really. He was truly someone who loved what he did, even if it seemed corny to the rest of the world. "Look at this girl! She's a real beauty..."

I did do a bit of research on Dasyatids (see I learnt a new word!), purely because of this incident, and it says if there back is brushed their tales rise automatically, and can't be prevented...

Much the same as we have to close our eyes when we sneeze.

So it seems like he was just unlucky.

When I first read it, I thought that it was an odd way to die, given that he's been in worse situations before and that a sting ray is not the world's most dangerous animal...I mean...my kids were petting some baby ones in a shallow pool at the aquarium a few weeks ago.

RIP - he will be missed by many. I guess he went out doing what he loved.

Saw it too. It is terrible but as others have said, he danced with danger every day of his life so he probably would have wanted to go out that way. Still, he was very young with a wife and kid.

People keep saying it's the way he would have wanted to go. Bullshit to that, I say. Honestly, Steve would be turning in his grave right now, cursing that a croc didn't chomp his head off. There have only been 7 deaths from Stingrays worldwide.

It bugs me that half of Australia (and probably the world) found out before his wife did. It also bugs me that his kids are now fatherless. But what really bugs me is that he was such an amazing environmentalist, and that he's no longer around to continue his crusade for animal rights.

Yesterday, Australia lost it's most modern-day recognised icon. RIP, Steve.

I don't think it'll be long before we see a "Steve Irwin Foundation" or somesuch. The man may have died, but it'll take a bit more than a stingray to kill his legacy. It's a dead set certainty that his wife and kids will carry the torch.
