Old-time D&D avoided the "human has as many hp as huge beastie" thing, but Japanese CRPGs went the other direction with Level 167 PCs of 8392 hp (and so on). I think World of Warcraft and other modern CRPGs have received a lot of influence from Japanese CRPGs (as has D&D 3e+).

Linux (and Mac OS X) basically has no games. There is of course Rogue and its various clones, but that is a particular taste that I don't really have... I do think that Linux and Mac OS X need some good CRPGs out there (and not of the Japanese-esque type)...

So far, I think only Planeshift (a free MMORPG) and Neverwinter Nights (some part of it) are available for Linux...

There are several RPGs for Linux, they are however, not Dungeons-And-Dragonsesque. You can run around as a penguin, though.

If my programming skills were better, I would begin the long process of removing MFCs from DC.

Speaking of AD&D games, I will not be playing the demo of ToEE after all. I downloaded the demo (all 218 MB of it), only to find out it is no longer supported by Atari - the "Play Demo" button does nothing, as apparently it waits for some signal from Atari. Lots of people are upset by this.

Really? Chee - that is bad on their part (I actually decided the buy the game after playing through that demo many, many times (I got to level 9 and had a troll in my party...) - the first time I actually decided to buy a game after playing the demo).

I didn't know that it sent a signal to Atari or something... Atari does seem to use a lot of copy protection and the like, which stinks.

Any Linux RPGs that you recommend? I haven't found anything interesting yet...

I'm kind of bummed out about not being able to play. Though, I'm not really in the mood for 3e right now.

I can recommend no Linux RPGs. I've tried several that are seriously lacking. I usually end up playing Sudoku on my Linux machine.

There is a really good version of Civilization that I've played though, called FreeCiv. There is a Sim CIty knock-off too that is pretty decent, but it didn't like my video card, so it was slow and jerky.

I have yet to find a game engine/editor for role playing games on LInux, not even one for text adventures...I think I'll look harder.

Uatu, is it really late for you, or really early?

Ah - FreeCiv, I have heard of that... I decided not to try it, though, since it seems to have made the AI better (I don't need my games to be that challenging )...

It just passed lunchtime for me, so it is neither late nor early!

Sorry about ToEE Did you download the demo from the Sorcerer's something-or-other site? (That's where I downloaded it, but I got it years ago.)

I downloaded ToEE from C|Net's Download.com, the recommended site by Atari.

FreeCiv can have the AI set to several difficulty levels for people like us.

I got it from the Sorcerer's Place - looking there, apparently there were two versions of the demo (one full version with time limit, another partial version with no time limit). I downloaded the latter, and played it basically as much as one can play a demo. I should write a FAQ (about the demo)!

I think I'm going to quite playing RPGs for a while. I've found that the more I play them, the harder it is to work on creating my own. I don't know why that is, but theorize that my brain will only allow a certain number of hours per week for RPGs, and if I use them up playing...

That is definitely true! It sure is easier to play games when your PC is on the floor, though, than to draw pictures...

(By the way, the Mighty Mouse (by Apple) is sort of "eh"... We'll see how drawing with it goes...)

Apple is known for it's ease of use for video editing and production, if that's any consolation. I believe that if my computer were on the floor, you would not even be getting responses in the forum let alone art or work on DC.
