hmmmm...confess...in my current game, I have Minsc specialized in Katanas since I let him dual wield CFury and FoA ADD: btw, I don't want to get into this powergaming comparison thing; as I stated in my first post in this thread, imo, Saverok is a superior NPC to Minsc powergaming wise; my picking of Minsc is more for roleplaying reasons (in particular circumstances). Rangers are weaker fighters than fighters (no matter the equipment) but can support the rest of the party better by my understanding.
Having the small arsenal of priest spells makes rangers somewhat better support characters. While a fighter maybe will manage to deal with the same enemy as the ranger, but he can do it faster and without needing support from the rest of the party... I find fighters better than rangers. Sending one fighter to clear the dungeon of the weak goblin hordes is far easier than struggling against the pathing problems while dragging the whole party through every little door to be found in the area... Also, with this "Psions Blade" Sarevok can clear lairs full of illithids, while with the same equipment minsc would probably still be struggling somewhere. Now i dont know what the Rangers HLA´s are, but i do know that improved whirlwind attack combined with the Silver Sword can cut down hordes of weaker enemies in no time. |

After Improved Hasting himself using an item, Critical Strike will allow Minsc to hit that broadside of the barn...
ADD] How does the Ring of Free Action interact with Greater Whirlwind? Greater Whirlwind will Improve Haste the character, but the Ring of Free Action specifically prevents that. [ 09-14-2003, 01:25 PM: Message edited by: Assassin ]

That's alright though, since this is all just on paper. Soul Reaver then, since that has no counter AFAIK. After one round of GWW, Minsc will be hardpressed to hit the broad side of a barn.
1. Sarevok uses Ravager and Minsc can dualwield Hindo's Doom and Axe of Unyielding (or Defender of Easthaven) with Hardiness and Armor of Faith. Minsc wins I think. 2. Sarevok uses Soul Reaver (and Ring of Free Action), Minsc uses DOE + Axe of Unyielding + Improved Haste + Critical Strike. Minsc wins again. Other combos ? ![]()

Wouldnt' it take Minsc a little whiel to cast all those spells, giving Sarevok a much higher chance of wiping him out early?

Why are you taking items into count?
Is it not so, that you can train (Or edit wit this Shadow Keeper) them both to do whatever the other can do, besides spell casting? Do items matter or the characters themselves? Tell me, who would win in an unarmed & unarmored fist-fight, Minsc or Sarevok? IMO Sarevok can do ALL the fighting Minsc can do and do it better. Oh, and i´m not talking about adding skill points with Shadow Keeper, just taking them from one weapon skill to another without making any invincible killing machines. |

A high level Ranger has the same THAC0 as a high level Fighter and they have almost the same HLA's.
Ranger has a couple od priest spells, where Armor of Faith rules, especially in combination with other items or spells or HLA's. Ranger has two ** in dualwield bonus. Ranger has Stealth. He eats fighters for breakfast, then he fights bigger and stronger enemies ![]()

Okay, if you really hate using items, then just use a Long Bow (Minsc has proficiencies in it when you pick him up at level 7) and Smite him away. I mean, he can't harm you if he's in hit recovery, right? And, during the second round of Smite, GWW.
